SERBIA CLAIM BALKAN CHAMPIONSHIP

Serbia claimed the second Balkan Chaampionship, held in Belgrade, convincingly beating holders Greece 50-8 in the deciding game; Bulgaria Wolves making their international debut in the tournament.

“We gave the chance to some of our younger players to gain international experience,“ said Serbian captain Dalibor Vukanović, who along with Dimitris Dajč, Vladica Nikolić and Admir Hadžić took on the temporary role of coaching the national team. “We are happy for our two wins but more importantly we had some 18 and 19 year olds debuting for the senior side who looked very good and set us up for the future.”

The tournament opened in the Rakovica stadium with Greece defeating the defiant Bulgarians 68-8 who, two days later, at the FK Heroj Polet field, showed immediate progress against a youthful Serbian side containing mostly U21 players, leading at half time, Antonio Lubenov grabbing a hat trick for the Wolves.

In the decider, Serbia’s power up front proved decisive, Miloš Zogović and Rajko Trifunović claiming try doubles for the hosts as they crossed nine times in all.
