RLEF AGM & CONFERENCE REGISTERS RECORD ATTENDANCE

A record number of 24 nations, an increase of four from last year, attended the 11th Rugby League European Federation Annual Council Meeting and fourth RLEF Conference at Brunel University, to coincide with last weekend’s Challenge Cup final at Wembley Stadium.

It signalled a first full year as chair for Maurice Watkins CBE. “Some notable progress has been made by many of our members in line with RLEF strategy and there is real unity of purpose throughout the countries to strengthen their on and off-field operations,” he said. “The high proportion of members in attendance and the distances travelled by some points to an extremely committed and serious group.”

Thirteen of 15 RLEF members, eight of 13 Observers and three uncategorised nations attended and also received with a Rugby League World Cup update delivered by competition general manager Sally Bolton and operations director Jon Dutton.

The delegates then participated in a lively debate led by RLEF and RLIF board member Graeme Thompson covering proposed re-structuring of the 2014-21 RLEF international calendar, which could see the European Cup, Shield and Bowl replaced by an integrated European Championship from next year. The planned name change is designed to enable members to better engage with local stakeholders, especially in government, who are familiar with dealing with such a system.

The draft eight-year calendar is now set for a month’s consultation period to allow the members time to study the mechanics of a system that would introduce promotion and relegation between the tiers.

Federazione Italiana Rugby League vice president Tiziano Franchini delivered a presentation on the possible re-introduction of the Mediterranean Cup and South African Rugby League official Chris Botes outlined SARL’s bid to host the 2017 Rugby League World Cup.

The final session, on media, was delivered by Sydney Morning Herald columnist and writer Steve Mascord and the Hellenic Rugby League Federation’s George Stilianos.

“The conference actually exceeded our expectations and I am still processing all the ideas, data and information,” commented Danmark Rugby League Forbund president Steve Davy. “It offered an extremely valuable chance to learn from fellow delegates. It was a unique opportunity to share ideas with countries that are new to rugby league,” he added.

Members in attendance: Czech Republic (CZRLA), England (RFL), France (FFRXIII), Germany (RLD), Ireland (RLI), Italy (FIRL), Lebanon (LRLF), Russia (ARLK), Scotland (SRL), Serbia (SRLF), South Africa (SARL), Ukraine (UFRL), Wales (WRL)

Observers: Belgium (BRLA), Denmark (DRLF), Greece (HeRLFC), Latvia (LRL), Malta (MRL), Netherlands (NRLB), Sweden (SRL), UAE (UAERL)

Uncategorised: Ghana, Poland, Romania

GREEK RUGBY LEAGUE FEDERATION FORMED AND ACCEPTED

In a major step forward for the on-going development of rugby league in Greece, an Athens Magistrates Court has approved an application for federation status, confirming the creation of the Hellenic Rugby League Federation. As a result, the HRLF has now been accorded official Observer status by the Rugby League European Federation. HRLF will now hold new elections to vote in directors of the new organisation.

“Now that the Hellenic Federation of Rugby League is recognised by the Greek justice system we can put the sport on the map here,” said Tasos Pantazidis who was President of the Committee to Establish a Hellenic Rugby League Federation.

“Both developments will help us to overcome obstacles put in front of us. We now have the possibility to build relations with local and national communities. The planned 13-a-side club championship, the national team and the regional cups will all have support.

Pantazidis added, “I strongly believe that we have entered a new, promising era for rugby league in Greece.”

Regional Rugby League Round Up – 17th August

Regional Rugby League Round Up – 17th August

LONDON, SOUTH EAST & EAST

In the London Premier League Grand Final SOUTH WEST CHARGERS finally ended the reign of HAMMERSMITH HILLS HOISTS with a 20-10 victory.

There was another cracking game in the South East League Grand Final at Gillingham with PORTSMOUTH NAVY SEAHAWKS beating home side and Minor Premiers MEDWAY DRAGONS 27-22 to take the title.

In the East Grand Final NORTH HERTS CRUSADERS recorded a 34-24 victory over ST IVES ROOSTERS and in their Entry League Grand Final BEDFORD TIGERS A beat CAMBRIDGE LIONS 40-22.

MIDLANDS

Premier Division Grand Final – Telford Raiders 14 Coventry Dragons 4

In a tense and at times brutal final Telford Raiders prevailed to become the Midlands Premiers for 2013. In a low scoring game chances were few and far between, however Telford’s greater experience told. After the early sparring, Stephen Taylor the Raiders hooker opened the scoring, burrowing his way over from dummy half, Ben Lewis tagging on the extras. Scrum half Lewis was next on the scoreboard when he also spotted a gap close the Dragons line and darted over too far out to add the extras. Dragons threatened, however they were unable to find their way over the line and it was Telford who right on half time created some space for centre James Derry to cross out wide, Lewis unsuccessful with the conversion. Coventry started the second half in barnstorming fashion, with their coach’s words still ringing in their ears Danny Coleman scored their first points with a neat try. As the half progressed, tensions began to rise which led to a couple of skirmishes which referee Peter Parker handled with great authority.

Midlands Division One Play Off Final – Coventry Bears A 50 North East Worcestershire Ravens 16

The Bears ran out comfortable winners although the New Ravens where very much in the game up until the 30 minute mark. The Bears’ speed and skill then begin to tell from that point and they racked up a total of ten tries with Alex Mills Baker grabbing a hat trick. Hyunwu Kang, Balne Howe, Shaun Donnelly, Jamie Howe, George Rea, Paul Gascoigne and Mike Ryan were their other tryscorers with Harry Kaufman kicking three goals and Blake Howe one. For the Ravens Rich Whitehouse, Matt Jupp and Jack Keeling crossed, David Wimbury kicked two conversions.

FORTY-20 YORKSHIRE MEN’S

SKIRLAUGH BULLS edged nearer what could be a decisive title showdown against arch rivals West Hull Lions with an emphatic 50-18 victory over MILFORD MARLINS, which came on the back of a second half scoring blitz. Full back Stuart Smith helped himself to four tries, whilst there was a brace apiece for the Foster brothers Alex and Sam in a ten try romp. Rob Brown and Gareth Storey also got on the score sheet with Brown also adding five goals. The contest had been in the balance up to half time as the Bulls went into the break 16-6 to the good. Marlins second rower Sean Flynn had given them hope just before the half hour mark with a try to which substitute Dave Whatmough added the extras. Between the opening of the second period and the 64th minute The Bulls added five tries, with Smith bagging four to effectively end the contest. Milford to their credit never threw the towel in and were rewarded with tries to Callum Stewart, who added the conversion on 73 minutes and, in added time, prop Ryan Pinder crashed over with Sean Mulligan goaling.

METHLEY ROYALS went down to a 25-24 home defeat at the hands of the HUNSLET CLUB in an Entry League clash. The game was Methley’s first since late May, while Hunslet have been playing throughout the summer – and it showed, the Royals struggling to retain possession, while the visitors generally completed their sets. Methley, nevertheless, could have won, despite having allowed a 14-6 lead to be turned into an 18-14 deficit with only 10 minutes left. Scrum-half Josh Dixon, however, grabbed a crucial try which, with second row Sam Payne’s second goal, nosed the Royals ahead. Hunslet bounced back with a touchdown for scrum-half Chris Boyce – their best player – and second row Michael Waite’s fourth conversion secured the visitors a 24-20 lead. Never-say-die Methley, with prop Richard Scott outstanding, levelled with a touchdown for second row Kieran Gledhill, but Payne was wide with the difficult conversion attempt. And, in a grandstand finish, Hunslet worked their way to the Royals’ posts, where Boyce landed what proved to be the winning drop goal. The game closed with Methley attacking the visitors’ try-line but time ran out on the Royals, who paid a heavy price for poor handling. Methley had, however, registered five tries to Hunslet’s four, with centre Joel Penny bagging an impressive brace and loose forward Lee Starbuck crossing. Stand-off Dave Williams, winger Zac Williams, and prop John Hughes also impressed. Prop James Silverblade, stand-off Alwyn Whittaker and Waite claimed Hunslet’s opening touchdowns.

NORTH WEST

CLOCK FACE MINERS defeated ASHTON BEARS 26-6 after building a 22 point first half lead. Matty Garner with a brace, Ian Lynch and Matt Norton crossed for Miners before the break, Martin Hutton landing three goals. Norton claimed his second touchdown on 57 minutes, Dan Smith with a consolation for the Bears, Matty Melling goaling.

HALTON SIMMS CROSS were too strong for HARESFINCH, running in eight tries in a 48-8 triumph. Winger Dean Ashworth and Ste McDermott both claimed hat tricks, Luke Williams and Dave Jones with their other touchdowns, Sean McWhirter perfect with the boot. Haresfinch’s points all came in the first half, Shaun Hudson and Ste McNamee with their tries.

Russian Rugby League Look To Build On European Shield Success

RUSSIAN RUGBY LEAGUE LOOK TO BUILD ON EUROPEAN SHIELD SUCCESS

Having emerged victorious at the culmination of the 2012-3 Rugby League European Shield – seeing off Italy, Serbia and Germany in the home and away tournament – Russia Rugby League (ARLK) are looking to further the sport in the country.

A three-day seminar and workshop in Naro-Fominsk, run by RLEF Coaching Manager Martin Crick, has identified a five man team that will help the ARLK to establish itself in the regions, comprising of Grigory Esin (St Petersburg, north region), Vladimir Kuschnerchuk (Rostov, south region), and Andrey Volkov, Kiril Borisov and Eduard Ososkov (Moscow and Moscow Region)

“It`s very necessary for us now to use this knowledge to raise up us many new coaches as it possible. With them we`ll revive our domestic championship and will raise it to a new, higher level,” said Esin

Following fruitful discussions between the RLEF and ARLK, the two organisations will work on agreeing on the implementation of the third and final phase of the RLEF Technical Strategy, which will see all five tutor candidates delivering Level 1 courses to new Russian coaches.

ARLK president Edgard Taturyan, who is leading the fight to restore Russian rugby league’s official government status, added, “You can see how serious the candidates were during the seminar and some of them came from distant cities. Now, the ARLK will stress the importance of sharing their new knowledge with new players and coaches.”

RLEF General Manager Danny Kazandjian was also present during the seminar, confirmed, “technical education must remain at the forefront of what we do. Russia is incredibly important to European rugby league. The ARLK is manned by determined, hard-working and loyal people who, despite having endured some tough times, never abandoned their posts. Now ARLK is at a stage where it can begin to plan constructively and really begin to look at growing the game in St Petersburg, Moscow and the south. The RLEF will continue to support the ARLK’s struggle to regain their official government status, which is imperative.”

According to Crick, “Russian Rugby League took a significant step forward. As playing numbers continue to expand, with significant numbers of schools and young people now playing the game, the development of coaches is crucial. I was hugely impressed with the levels of knowledge of those attending the seminar, and with their obvious love of the game, and the future looks bright for the sport in Russia.’

Regional Rugby League Round Up

Regional Rugby League Round Up – 10th August

FORTY-20 YORKSHIRE MEN’S

KIPPAX KNIGHTS overturned a 12-0 half time deficit to win 28-20 at OULTON RAIDERS. Loose forward Adam Lunn scored two tries for the Raiders in the opening forty, both goaled by Luke Richardson. Dale Boulton and a Ricky Fisher goal in the 47th minute saw the Knights on the board but a Jamie Bell try and two more Richardson goals seemed to have put Oulton in the driving seat. But Rob Kirk began the fightback on the hour, Anthony Baker and two more Fisher goals brining them to within two points. Eight minutes from time Kippax centre Lee Brookes went over for the decisive touchdown, Fisher adding the extras and a late try by Nathan Waters extended the victory margin.

MIDLANDS

BIRMINGHAM BULLDOGS’ winning run was halted by a resolute display from COVENTRY DRAGONS who won the play off semi final 28-20. Dragons began impressively, building a 28-8 lead soon after the break and although Birmingham staged a rally around the hour mark, it was too little too late to affect the outcome. Dragons were first to score, winger Carl Liddington outflanking the Birmingham line before cutting inside for a try that scrum half Mark Hyslop goaled. Bulldogs responded with some excellent handling from Shepherd, Sam Edgar and Farnham that ended with right centre Adam Walker touching down in the corner to cut the deficit to two points. Two penalty concessions by Bulldogs set up a position for Dragons second rower Dave Whiting to drive over close to the posts, stand off Cameron Tune’s goal making it 12-4. Birmingham responded with a try as good as any in the match, as left centre Dan Ventrella finished some good handling to score out. The rest of the half was Coventry’s, as the visitors took full advantage of further penalty concessions by the hosts to post tries by prop Sam Ball and full back Kelvin Devoisey, Bulldogs woes were compounded when Ventrella had to leave the field with a badly swollen ankle. The opening minutes of the second half saw Dragons pull further away with tries from centre James Horrocks and, following a goal-line dropout, via Hyslop. Birmingham dug deep and proceeded to wrest the initiative: first Edgar went over from acting half back for a try that he goaled himself; then skipper Matt Dudley found enough space on the left to force his way over for a try, excellently converted by Edgar to cut the gap to eight points. Time was not on Bulldogs’ side, though, and they were forced to try and run from deep as Dragons defended tenaciously. In the end, it proved enough for the visitors to go through.

NORTH WEST

A try and five goals from Martin Hutton were behind CLOCK FACE MINERS’ 34-6 win over SHEVINGTON SHARKS. Alex Rigby gave Miners an early lead but on the 20 minute mark Sharks led, Luke Murphy crossing and Andy Beany goaling. Liam Crehan and Matty Norton went over before the break, Hutton goaling both to make it 16-6. There was no score in a tight third quarter but Sharks lost Steve O’Neill and then conceded Shane Erskine’s try, goaled by Hutton. He crossed himself and goaled soon after and added the extras to Andy Stanton’s late touchdown.

WEST OF ENGLAND

CHELTENHAM OLD PATESIANS capped an incredible first season in rugby league by demolishing defending champions OXFORD CAVALIERS 94-12 at Everest Road to win the West of England title at the first attempt. The Old Pats put on a commanding display scoring 18 tries with captain Darren Moore pulling the strings and finishing with a personal haul of 26 points from a try and 11 goals. The Cavaliers were a shadow of the side that contested an epic semi final last weekend and were pulled apart by Moore with eager runners profiting from the holes he created. Old Pats’ defence was also in no mood for compromise and the Cavaliers could only cross the line three times in reply as they were swept away. The rout began in the second minute when James Pettigrew scored the first of his three tries straight from a tap penalty. Henry Tapsell scored next coasting over with two men outside him in support. Sadly Tapsell was taken to hospital with a suspected broken leg shortly after Ben Tupper had added to tries from Jamie Fisher and Simon Brown to give the home side a 24-4 lead. Ben Sydenham had gone over for the Cavaliers but Callum Stonier and Tupper added to Old Pats lead before Stewart Wankell scored in the corner for the visitors. Despite their tries, the Cavaliers looked all at sea, unable to cope with Pats’ direct running and crisp handling. Just before the interval Moore dummied over for a simple try that summed up the first half in a nutshell. Moore added the goal to put Pats out of sight at 38-8 at the break. If the Cavaliers thought the second half would bring some form of respite they were mistaken. Pats extended their lead three minutes into the half through Tupper before three tries in five minutes from Paul Knight, Brown after a lovely pass from Jamie Park and Fisher after a 50-metre run down the wing took the score past the half century. Wes Newton pulled a consolation try back for the Cavaliers but the Pats were now enjoying themselves thoroughly. Pettigrew picked up a loose ball and ran half the length of the field to score and then did the same thing again straight from the restart. Jonathan Loudon and Stonier went over after breaking through the defence and racing to the line before some sublime handling sent Fisher over for the final try in an utterly comprehensive victory.

LONDON

HAMMERSMITH HILL HOISTS made it through to the Grand Final of the London Premier League with a 36-16 victory over EASTERN RHINOS in the semi-final play-off. But the reigning champions were made to fight all the way by a determined Rhinos outfit. The visitor’s failure to convert pressure into points was to cost them dear against a Hammersmith side who always look dangerous in attack and were lighting quick on the break. The Rhinos took an early lead in a very tight opening first quarter, but as the half progressed Hoists took control, spending much of the second quarter in the Rhinos half and by half time had opened up a 20- 6 lead.Hammersmith increased their lead soon after the interval but as the half progressed the Rhinos began to assert their authority and despite excellent defending by their opponents added two tries of their own. However, Hammersmith were at their most dangerous on the break and punished the Rhinos on the counter attack to wrap up the game.In next week’s final they will play SOUTH WEST CHARGERS who beat LONDON SKOLARS A 30-8, Joe Mbu in the Skolars’ ranks, in the other semi-final.

Russia Take Rugby League European Shield After Germans Fail To Get Visas In Time

RUSSIA TAKE RUGBY LEAGUE EUROPEAN SHIELD AFTER GERMANS FAIL TO GET VISAS IN TIME

Russia have been awarded the 2012-3 Rugby League European Shield after their final game at home to Germany this weekend was called off, after a number of the opposition players failed to apply for their visas in time.

The Bears, who were overwhelming favourites to beat the bottom of the table Germans – who are now relegated to the European Bowl – needed a point to claim the crown.

They had won four of their five matches and have been awarded this tie 30-0 by the Rugby League European Federation Board.

The RLEF has also pledged to review the operations of RL Deutschland in view of the circumstances.

Newly appointed RLD President Benedikt Rehm commented, “Due to the fact that a number of German players were not able to get their visa issues sorted in time, and as four players’ passports were delayed by a courier on the way to the consulate in Berlin, Rugby League Deutschland has been forced to cancel the game against the Russians.”

“On behalf of RL Deutschland I’m extremely sorry that we were not able to arrange everything in time and make the game happen. Having learned from our mistakes we will restructure RLD for 2014, to ensure that situations like this do not happen again.

“I want to express our disappointment especially to the Russian Rugby League, which I know has put in a lot of effort towards hosting us,” he added.

RLEF General Manager Danny Kazandjian commented, “This is an extremely unfortunate – and avoidable – situation and I particularly regret that the ARLK has been denied the opportunity to play a valuable home game with the potential to receive the Shield in front of their loyal home supporters.

“It is certainly not the way anyone wanted what has been on the whole a thoroughly successful two-year tournament to end.

“For the first time in the competition’s history the RLEF provided specific pre-match funding and unfortunately RL Deutschland was unable to meet its obligations to the competition and its fellow participants.

Kazandjian continued, “The RLEF has been reviewing RL Deutschland for several months and we will work closely with Bene Rehm and the association’s leaders to ensure that the organisation begins to meet its potential.

“I congratulate Edgard Taturyan, the president of the ARLK, national team coach Eduard Ososkov, his captain Alex Lysokon and their squad for what has been a very successful two years for Russia, culminating in a worthy triumph in the European Shield.”

Regional Rugby League Round Up

Regional Rugby League Round Up – 3rd August

NORTH WEST

In the cup, ASHTON BEARS pulled off a terrific win at LEIGH EAST, triumphing 16-12. Bears full back Matty Melling was the star with a try ten minutes from time and two goals, Andrew Ball and prop Kieran Spencer also finding the whitewash. Easts, who were ahead on the hour mark, had touchdowns from Ryan Hughes and Andrew Gregson, Craig Dean with two goals. Hooker Seraz Rama was a standout for Leigh, Mark Pilling excelling for Ashton.

On the league front, HAYDOCK proved too strong for BANK QUAY BULLS, winger Karl Dinsdale the top performer with three tries and four goals in a 48-22 triumph. Scott Jordan, Dean Dollin – who also kicked four goals – went over in the first half for Haydock; Matt Foster, Danny Woods and Nick Braide replying, Braide with two goals as there was little between the sides for the opening 20 minutes. Two quick fire Dinsdale tries gave his side momentum, Johnson with a second and Carl Cheetham also crossing in the second half. Winger Kamen Smith got a consolation for the Bulls, Braide with his third goal.

LONDON & SOUTH EAST

In the London Premier League SOUTH WEST CHARGERS beat HEMEL A 44-22 to finish second in the table and guarantee a home semi-final in the play offs.

The EASTERN RHINOS secured third spot and will go into the play offs full of confidence after running in 12 tries in their comprehensive 62-0 home win against bottom side ELMBRIDGE EAGLES.

It was an historic day for the MEDWAY DRAGONS. They beat SUSSEX MERLINS 50-10 to finish top of the South East league with all but one of the players having come up through the club’s junior ranks. Charlie Mears and Aaron Beezley touched down for the Merlins.

WEALD WARRIORS secured second place with a 50-24 win over PORTSMOUTH NAVY SEAHAWKS while SOUTHAMPTON SPITFIRES rounded off their season with a 60-10 home victory over GUILDFORD GIANTS.

In the Entry League THAMES DITTON TIGERS beat SOUTH WEST CHARGERS A 22-18 who nevertheless finished top.

WEST OF ENGLAND

A drop goal in the tenth minute of sudden-death extra time from Tom Miles sent OXFORD CAVALIERS through to the West of England Division Grand Final against Cheltenham Old Patesians next Saturday, as they beat GLOUCESTERSHIRE WARRIORS 33-32. The Cavaliers had levelled the scores in the last minute of normal time when Connor McCafrey scored his second try but Adam White’s conversion that would have given them a win in normal time struck the angle of post and crossbar and stayed out. The Warriors were in parts inspired and then disappointing. They dug themselves out of a hole by recovering from an early 12-point deficit but could not shake off a tenacious Oxford side that clung on and finally triumphed at the end. Warriors struggled with their discipline early in the game and three times committed the cardinal sin of conceding penalties when in possession. Gifted the ball in good field position the Cavaliers made it count. Adam Thompson and Wes Newton both crashed over from close range with White gaoling both scores. After twenty minutes, the Warriors sparked into life and Dave Tomlinson’s wide pass gave Sam Goatley enough space to round the defence and score. Moments later, the same combination worked again and Goatley dotted down between the posts. Two minutes later, Tomlinson’s chip over the top sat up perfectly for Alex Hoyle who raced over. Ash Lewis added the extras to give the Warriors a 16-12 lead. However, the old failings returned and McCafrey went over in the corner before Newton grabbed his second try to give the home side a six-point lead. That was wiped out just before the interval as Goatley found a gap and gave Lewis the scoring pass. Having converted that score, Lewis added his second try two minutes into the second half stretching over to score after an arcing run had taken him to the line. Seven minutes later, Jamie Jones crashed over for a try hotly disputed by the Warriors, so much so that Neil Cully was sinbinned. The Warriors survived his absence but went behind with seventeen minutes to go when White slotted a penalty goal from 20 metres out. Despite pouring rain, the topsy turvy nature of the game continued as Josh Kelly crossed for the Warriors, Lewis adding a good goal to give the Gloucestershire side a four point lead but that only set up the final denouement as the Cavaliers pressed the Warriors goal-line defence until a kick to the corner on the last tackle finally found the Warriors’ defence absent and McCafrey grounded the ball before it went dead. White’s missed conversion with the final kick of normal time ensured the game remained locked up at 32-32 and a tense period of extra time ensued. The Cavaliers had the better chances to break the deadlock but missed a drop goal attempt and then a long-range penalty before the Warriors got into good field position but went for the try rather than a drop goal and the chance was lost. Finally, the Warriors lost possession trying to break out of their own half and the Cavaliers worked the position for Miles to end a classic semi final.

SOUTH WEST

DEVON SHARKS ran in eight tries as they won 38-18 at home to PLYMOUTH TITANS. Ollie Hill and Jacob Stirling gave Sharks a perfect start with unconverted tries in the opening 15 minutes. Danny Luffman replied, Ozzy Flowers converting but Joe Briggs and Mark Molyneux went over for Devon, Ashley Angsermoz with their first conversion to make it 18-6. Rob Owns hit back Flowers goaling to reduce the deficit to a converted try at the break. Dan Davis extended the Sharks’ lead in the 55th minute, Flowers with a try and goal on the hour. Devon finished the stronger, however, Jake Chapman, Davis and Hill with second tries, Angsermoz adding more two goals.

FORTY-20 YORKSHIRE MEN’S

Two tries and five goals from scrum half Ricky Fisher accounted for 18 points as KIPPAX KNIGHTS beat OULTON RAIDERS 42-16. Warren Leafe, Connor Scokett, Craig Oliver, Craig Riley, Louis Silkstone and Jamie Oliver crossed for the Knights who led 28-6 at the break. Andy Tillett crossed twice for Raiders – his second the only score in the final 30 minutes following a monsoon, Dane Charles with their other try, Luke Richardson and Adam Biscomb with the goals.

Tries just before and after the break from Harry Brown and Alex Smith were the impetus for YORK ACORN as they defeated STANNINGLEY 38-19. Ryan Watson, Darryl North and Brown crossed for Acorn, Nathan Hebblethwaite goaling all three and finishing with five conversions. Jack Marshalll posted an unconverted score for Stanningley, Danny Clifford doing likewise. Charlie Settle got the visitor’s seventh touchdown, Marshall with a second for Stanningley, Connor McGill grabbing a drop goal and try and Clifford with their only goal.

WEST HULL LIONS won the derby with SKIRLAUGH Bulls 28-16. Centre Foster claimed a brace for Wests, Staples, Roe and Carter their other try scorers, Colrein with four goals. Prop Thompson landed a try double for the Bulls, Blakeborough with a try and goal, Brown also with a conversion.

MIDLANDS

BIRMINGHAM BULLDOGS warmed up for the play offs with a 98-8 mauling over NEW RAVENS in Bromsgrove. Bulldogs, who needed a big win to secure second spot did so, running in 17 tries, 15 of which were goaled. Prop Laurence Edwards opened the scoring, striding over for a try that Sam Edgar goaled. Straight from the restart, centre Adam Walker ran 80 metres, Edgar again adding the extras. Speedy centre Dan Ventrella then notched a brace of tries, both well goaled by Edgar. A penalty put Ravens on the attack, and scrum half Ben Coleman went over from acting half back to put the hosts on the scoreboard. But the home made a hash of fielding the restart, and Bulldogs winger Joe Williams dived on the loose ball for a try in the corner. A hat trick try for Ventrella, plus two more for Williams for his hat trick, all adroitly goaled by Edgar completed an impressive half for the visitors who led 46-4. There was no let-up as the second half began, Ravens misfielded the kick-off and Walker was on hand to claim his second try. A penalty for a high tackle led to Birmingham skipper Matt Dudley touching down. A slick assist from Matt Beattie, having an excellent match, put Andrew Burton over for the first of a brace of tries. Loose forward Beattie then broke through for a deserved score; four more goals from Edgar giving Bulldogs a 70-point lead. Burton posted his hat-trick try and Ventrella crossed twice more to bring his try tally to five. Three more goals by Edgar took the visitors past the 90-point mark. Once again, a penalty set up Ravens in an attacking position and good handling saw second rower Jack Sealey find space on the right flank. Last word went to Birmingham, as winger Joe Gregory crossed wide out, Edgar converting well to round off proceedings.
