RLEF ADMITS TURKEY AS AN OBSERVER NATION

The Turkish Rugby League Association has been awarded Observer status by the RLEF. The development follows a busy period in the country with the TRLA completing its first domestic championship involving five clubs, hosting two international beach events, as well as participating in the inaugural Balkans Super League.

“This is the best reward for our year of hard work on and off the pitch,” said TRLA development officer Julien Treu. “We toured Serbia and Greece, organised coach and match official courses, and a Turkish club won their first match against foreign opponents when champions Kadikoy Bulls defeated Lokomotiv Sofia. With a clear increase in participation, we see big potential here and we are confident Turkey can become a major rugby league country in the region. Affiliate membership is the next step and we will keep up the hard work to fulfil the criteria. Many thanks are due to all the volunteers involved.”

RLEF Central and Eastern Europe director Jovan Vujosevic, who has worked closely with TRLA since its inception in 2016, echoed those sentiments. “In less than a year the TRLA completed such a lot and deserve their recognition,” he commented. “Turkey is one of biggest countries in our region with big investment in sport and I am confident that rugby league has a bright future there.”

TRLA secretary general Gürol Yıldız praised the foundation clubs that are the bedrock of the association. “This is a huge recognition for the Turkish Rugby League Association after completing its first regular season. We are all excited and looking forward to new clubs coming on board in 2017-18. Our founding teams, Kadikoy, runners up Eskisehir Aqua, Bilgi Badgers, Olimpos and Bosphorus Wolves all deserve many congratulations for their efforts. Formally joining the RLEF is a proud moment for all TRLA board members, clubs and players.”

Netherlands rugby league set to play first international in capital

NETHERLANDS HEAD TO THE CAPITAL FOR HISTORIC INTERNATIONAL CLASH

The Netherlands Rugby League Bond has announced two international fixtures, away to Germany and a debut against Sweden – a match that will see Amsterdam stage an international for the first time.

The Netherlands XIII will visit their neighbours on the 26 August and face Sweden two weeks later on 9 September. Head coach, Kane Krlic commented: “Over the past three years we have prioritised the domestic competition and the Bond has done some fantastic work developing it. That has enabled us to create the biggest pool of players we’ve ever had in the Netherlands and it’s especially pleasing to see the amount of young, talented Dutchmen in the system now.

“As a coaching team, we’ve been keeping a close eye on all the players throughout the season. We used the three-match RAF tour as an opportunity to trial all of them which gave us an even more comprehensive analysis and we’ll select our national squad from that.

He continued: “I know the Swedish are keen to develop their own domestic players too and I’m really excited to see our guys come up agains new opposition. Similarly, Germany have done great work over the past 18 months and have a similar philosophy to us when it comes to developing their own players. They’ve also had a handful that have played in NRLB Championship for Amsterdam Cobras which should make the game even more intense.”

CZECH REPUBLIC TAKE HONOURS IN BUDAPEST

Two tries in three minutes at the start of the second half saw the Czech Republic emerge triumphant, 26-6, against Hungary at the KFKI Sporttelep in Budapest.

Centre Martin Košťál and second rower Richard Gach did the damage after the break, the visitors running in five tries in all in the first official Test match between the nations.

“The game gave us an excellent opportunity to bring through new players and expose them to a higher standard of rugby league,” said Czech assistant coach Petr Šedina. “All six debutants have made us proud of their efforts. The Hungarians fought until the end and earned our respect for the way they contested for 80 minutes. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves in Budapest and look forward to welcoming them in less than a month.”

Winger András Nemes crossed for a late, deserved consolation for the hosts.

HRLF official and player Zsolt Luakcs noted: “It was honour to host the Czech Republic on the day of the sixth anniversary of Hungarian Rugby League. Our history started with them and this was another milestone, to play the first fully sanctioned international between us.

“We see them as a model of healthy domestic development. I hope that our cooperation at club and international level will boost not only our nations but will be a good example for other European nations.”

HUNGARY FACE CZECH REPUBLIC IN FIRST TEST CLASH

Hungary and the Czech Republic meet on an official basis for the first time when they cross swords at KFKI Pálya, Budapest tomorrow (Saturday).

They met as development nations in 2011 and again the following year but now both have official status so this is the first recognised international between them.

Hungary RL official Zsolt Lukacs, who is set to play in the game, commented: “This is another important milestone for us as we seek to establish a solid rugby league presence in the country, we are very much looking forward to welcoming a nation who we recognise as offering us a model of progress.”

Three of their domestic clubs are represented in the squad, along with UK-based Keighley Cougar Dane Weatherill, whilst Australian player/coaching duo Steve Németh and Geoffrey Stephens will provide direction for the hosts.

Czech coach Ladislav Cintler, who has brought in debutants Adam Vojtech, Richard Gach, Marko Mecava, Martin Kostal, Ales Pour and Jan Riha, noted: “We are travelling to Budapest with a lot of respect for our opponents. We have been building bonds with the Hungarians at club level over the past two years and they have some really strong players who are improving all the time. The match allows us to blood six youngsters and the experience they will gain will be invaluable in their continued development.”

Hungary’s players warmed up with a match against a Poland XIII last week, winning 56-4.

USA and Jamaica name sides for Rugby League Americas Championship Game 1

USA & JAMAICA NAME SIDES FOR AMERICAS CLASH

The opening game in the Americas Championship takes place at Hodges Field, Jacksonville on Saturday (kick off 5pm) with USA coach Sean Rutgerson naming seven debutants in the Hawks side to face Jamaica.

Brooklyn Kings pair Dominic DeFalco and Marcus Satavu are set to make their bow, along with Chris Frazier, Fotukava Malu, David Ulch, Sean Hunt and Delaware Black Foxes’ Martwain Johnson.

The Reggae Warriors give new caps to five players, all from their domestic competition, with Canada – who were beaten 14-8 by the USA in the 2016 decider – watching on with interest before entering next month.

“This is the first substantial step this year for domestic players to be considered for the World Cup in October and November,” said Rutgerson, who will assist USA head coach Brian McDermott in that competition.

Six of the squad are retained from their World Cup Qualifiers in December 2015, including Kristian Freed who is set to play his twelfth Test for the USA. Originally from Brisbane with USA heritage, he has brought his family to White Plains, New York for the 2017 USARL season and is making an impact with the White Plains Wombats.

Jamaica head coach Romeo Monteith is quietly optimistic that the Warriors, ranked 17th in the world, can cause an upset against a nation who are seven places higher.

“This team has trained hard and I’m expecting the players to leave everything on the field,” he noted. “It’s never easy playing away from home but that also means we do not have as much pressure on us, if the guys stay relaxed and enjoy the game we should perform well.”

Jamaica’s newcomers are Reinhardo Richards, Kareem Harris, Andrew Simpson, Owen Linton and Keta Bryan, however, a fractured jaw in the Jamaica National Club Championship forced the withdrawal of veteran centre Renaldo Wade.

USA 18-MAN SQUAD

Sean Hunt, Fotukava Malu, Nicholas Newlin, Terrance Williams (Atlanta Rhinos), Dominic DeFalco, Marcus Satavu (Brooklyn Kings), Taylor Alley, Bart Longchamp (Central Florida Warriors), Martwain Johnson (Delaware Black Foxes), Junior Vaivai (Illawarra Wests), Chris Frazier (Northern Virginia Eagles), Gabriel Farley, Andrew Kneisly (Philadelphia Fight), Joshua Rice (New York Knights), Jonathan St John, David Ulch (Tampa Mayhem), Kristian Freed, Matt Walsh (White Plains Wombats)

JAMAICA 17-MAN SQUAD

Andre McFarlane, Andrew Simpson, Leon Thomas, Nathan Campbell, Owen Linton (Duhaney Park Red Sharks), Kareem Harris, Keta Bryan (GC Foster College Lions), Brian Hutchinson (Jacksonville Axemen), Adrian Hall (Liguanea Dragons and University of the West Indies), Antonio Baker (Mico University College), Reinhardo Richards (Spanish Town Vikings), Omar Jones, Tyronie Rowe (Vauxhall Vultures), Demone McDougal, Romaen Campbell (Washington Blvd. Bulls), Nicholas Wright, Peter Tapper (Unattached)

FIRST LEVEL 2 COURSE COMPLETED ON THE CONTINENT

RLEF Education has completed its first-ever Level 2 match official course, hosted by the Serbian Rugby League Federation in Belgrade, as part of the EU-backed Training and Education Portal project.

“Belgrade was the ideal location to launch the new Level 2 course,” said overseeing RLEF tutor, Phil Smith. “It was great to see the participants up-skill their education as well as officiate on the many matches that were played in tandem.”

SRLF Level 1 MO educator Radoslav Novakovic helped Smith and RLEF match official manager Tom Mather deliver the course, which was attended by Jean Pierre Zarb of Malta, Adrian Seglem from Norway, Zsolt Lukacs and Balint Mezes from Hungary and three Serbian level 2 candidates. Russian educator Andrey Zhukov also attended, outside the framework of the TEP.

“We saw a number of developing officials who, with action plans and a few more games under their belts, will be excellent and more than capable of climbing the match officials ladder,” said Mather. “The course was an eye opener for a number of the match officials, who dealt well with a new level of complexity and temperatures of 38 degrees!”

In addition to Zhukov and Novakovic, two of the local officials completed all the tasks and will now need to complete a series of continuing professional developments tasks before receiving their level 2 qualification.

Zarb said: “The course was very interesting and productive, especially the experience side of it for me, as well as having the chance to speak to so many other rugby league nations face to face.”

“I learned a lot of new things, improved on what I already knew and even got feedback from how I did officiating in games,” said Seglem. “This experience helps raise the level in Norway and assists in us introducing stricter rules into our competition.”

In addition, the first continental Level 2 coaching course has been completed in Vrchlabi, Czech Republic. Held at the brand new football stadium in the town, the course was led by Czech educator David Lahr, who was supported by Svenska Rugby League Forening colleague Ashley Brown and RLEF Coaching Manager Martin Crick.

“It was a very successful four-day course that saw four coaches work with players from the Vrchlabi Mad Squirrels,” said Crick. “I was hugely impressed with the ability and endeavour of both coaches and educators, and feel sure that playing levels in the Czech Republic will improve considerably as a result.”

The attending coaches will now be responsible for completing a series of professional development tasks before receiving their L2 qualification, while Crick moves onto Belgrade to conduct a similar course for Serbian, Maltese and Norwegian delegates.

Brown added: “It was great to see technical and knowledgeable coaches from all over the Czech Republic improve their coaching skills. I’m confident both the Czech Republic and Sweden will benefit from the course. A big thanks to the Mad Squirrels for donating their time, and to the town of Vrchlabi for providing the awesome facilities.”

The TEP is a three-year, €723.000 investment into capacity building through good governance and technical training, funded by €466.000 from the EU’s Erasmus+ project and the remainder from the RLIF and five of its full members. It is intended to build the knowledge and skills of the RLEF’s 21 European members, divided into six regional clusters, through high quality training and mentoring, while granting opportunities to share experiences amongst fellow Europeans dedicated to rugby league development.

GERMAN AND IRISH MATCH OFFICIAL EDUCATORS QUALIFIED

A training course in Hattingen, Germany, has resulted in two host and two Irish Level 1 match official educators and six new referee’s qualified, as part of the EU-backed Training and Education Portal project.

Max and Bob Doughton from Nationaler Rugby League Deutschland, and James Spencer and Paul Causby from Rugby League Ireland, are now authorised to deliver Level 1 MO courses, increasing the capacity of their national organisations.

In a continuing sign of the RLEF’s flexibility in technical delivery, the four-day activity was led by Wales RL’s Steve Allen and RLI’s head of match officials, Steve Hogan.

“To see the course delivered in German and the students so keen to learn was superb,” said Hogan. “The volume of questions demonstrated their desire to grasp as much knowledge as they could. All the new instructors demonstrated their passion to deliver the course in a professional yet relaxed manner. An additional bonus was that we got to see children of all ages and of both genders actively training and genuinely enjoying rugby league.”

USA rugby league name squads for ‘Origin’ clash

PRESS RELEASE – FOR IMMEDIATE DISTRIBUTION

Date: 6 July, 2017

USARL NAME SQUADS FOR NORTH VS SOUTH ALL-STAR MATCH

The North versus South Origin game will return as part of the USA Rugby League sporting calendar, scheduled for Tampa on 9 September, as part of the Hawks’ build up to the 2017 Rugby League World Cup.

Featuring the best domestic players, USARL chairman Peter Illfield commented: “Post regular season, this match is another opportunity to impress selectors for the 23-man squad going to the World Cup. It highlights the importance of the 2017 season for our clubs and players by recognizing and acknowledging the talent shown during the year.”

The event will again be hosted by Tampa Mayhem at Tampa Catholic High School Football Stadium, with South looking to retain the title they dramatically won 38-32 last year.

Tampa Mayhem co-owner Chris Dickerson noted; “The event last year was not only a huge success for us as a club, but great for the growth of rugby league as the USARL continues to expand into new frontiers. Florida is a place where the sport will continue to grow and this year’s event will be even bigger and better.”

Last Tackle, a reality sports documentary company that is currently producing a series charting the rise of Toronto Wolfpack which is being broadcast into 50 million U.S. households, will be again supporting the event as sponsors.

Brooklyn Kings’ Brent Richardson will coach the North for the second time and Sean Rutgerson (Jacksonville Axemen), who is part of the USA national staff alongside head coach Brian McDermott, the South.

“The All-star game allows players to test their ability against the best in the competition and gives much needed spotlight for identifying talent,” said Richardson. “It is vital that we get an understanding of which American players can match it with the best in the world and this game is the perfect stepping stone.”
