SPAIN BECOMES TWENTIETH RLEF MEMBER

The Asociacion Española de Rugby League (AERL) has been accepted as the ninth Affiliate Member of the Rugby League European Federation and its 20th overall.

“Achieving Affiliate Member status is the best possible proof of the strength and seriousness of the Spanish project,” said AERL president Salomé Sansona. “Our new status puts the AERL at the level of some long-established federations and opens the possibility for the first time to play in official RLEF competitions.

“We also recognize the efforts of the 12 Spanish clubs who, through their joint work, have enabled us to achieve this goal. Our referees, coaches, players, volunteers and sponsors have also contributed to this recognition.

Sansona added, “We will work to continue establishing ourselves as the benchmark for emerging nations in Europe.”

Spanish rugby league began in February 2013, with the AERL officially formed that August and accepted as an Observer Member of the RLEF in December 2013.

Spain played its first full internationals in 2014 and will this year will field a youth national side for the first time.

The association’s most impressive work has been in establishing a burgeoning domestic championship, in line with RLEF strategy.

The principal league this season, based around Alicante and Valencia, will include seven clubs while AERL is also running West and East development leagues to incorporate new clubs formed in Barcelona, Cordoba, Madrid and Coria as well as staging an U18 club championship.

Belgium rugby league hold elite training camp

Belgium’s top rugby league players have held their first training camp with newly installed sport director Tony Benson in Brussels.

The former Leigh, Oldham and Oxford coach joined forces with the burgeoning Belgium operation in November and will this year try to mould the country’s best players into an effective national side as well as mentoring the new coaches who are active at club and, predominantly, school level.

“The objective of the testing day was to assess the ability of each squad member to ascertain their levels in strength, speed, agility, fitness, skills and decision making,” said Benson.

“It was important to understand where we are to assist in putting together an accurate programme to ensure we are prepared as best we can for the busy international program ahead.”

The Belgian Rugby League Association is planning four full internationals this year.

It has already announced an eye-catching match against Malta at Headingly, Leeds, on 21 June, confirmed a match in the Netherlands on 2 May and is poised to announce another home and away series in the coming days.

“I was very impressed with the levels we achieved in all areas and I would rate the day spent together as a huge success for the squad as I could feel us come together as a tight group in a very short time,” continued Benson.

“I was also delighted with the enthusiasm shown by the players and the level we are starting from exceeds my initial expectations.

“We will now continue to meet on a regular basis for training and games.”

‘TEAM JOHN’ WINS RISMAN CUP TO SET UP SERBIAN RUGBY LEAGUE SEASON

The now-traditional curtain-raiser to the Serbian rugby league season, the Risman Cup, was won by ‘Team John’, named after the younger son of legendary Gus Risman, John a former Serbian national coach.

They defeated ‘Team Bev’, named after the former dual-code Lions tourist and the elder Risman son, 30-10 after a convincing second half performance to take a 2-1 lead in the series.

Centre Miloš Ćalić scored two tries, the first and last, for the victors with Stefan Nedeljković – who scored 10 points from a try and three goals – named man of the match and chaired back on to the field by both sides in the traditional manner.

The game was a good show case and first test for the country’s best players ahead of the start of Serbia’s Championship.

CZECH RUGBY LEAGUE SEASON DETAILS ANNOUNCED

The 2015 CZRLA Annual General Meeting has established their season programme, placing emphasis on consolidating the First Division Championship, playing an inaugural 13-a-side junior season and ensuring both the senior and U18 national teams play challenging fixtures.

The decision was made to maintain a seven team Championship competition in 2015, played on a home and away basis, beginning in April and climaxing in a Grand Final in November, with a July-August summer break.

It is expected that the underpinning Second Division will be a four team league and that an inaugural U18 competition will be played between four clubs which will be linked to their senior team’s fixtures.

Junior development has continued in several Czech clubs with training sessions being held for boys and girls of a variety of ages over the last year, led by Pardubice Jets.

On the international front, the AGM agreed a 2015 home and away series between the Czech and Belgium, as well as planning a game against Sweden, to be hosted by the Havlickuv Brod club in July.

The decision was also made for the CZRLA to host a two-game series between the Czech U18 team and a visiting England Colleges side, while they also hope to tour Latvia with a junior and possibly senior team during the summer break, as repayment for the Latvians bringing their youth team to the Czech Republic in 2014.

The CZRLA also has ambitions of fielding a ‘President’s team’ to play against Serbian, Bosnian and Hungarian opposition in Budapest in a summer tournament although the decision was made to discontinue Pardubice hosting an annual CZRLA International 9s tournament.

Jaroslav Bzoch, an RLEF qualified coach tutor, referee and club leader at the Teplice Dragons was elected to the CZRLA Board at the AGM, replacing Matt Smith, the Czech Republic’s leading referee and match official tutor.

He is looking forward to playing a key role in the Czech Republic’s continued rugby league development. “I am honoured to be elected to the Board,” he said.

“I will be doing all I can to ensure we continue to grow rugby league in the Czech Republic.”

FIRL PREPARES FOR EXPANDED YOUTH CHAMPIONSHIP

In preparation for what promises to be the most extensive domestic season in the modern history of Italian rugby league, the Federazione Italiana Rugby League has run three U18 training camps.

Overseen by national team coach Paul Broadbent and his assistant Kelly Rolleston, the technical camps began in Turin and ended in Brescia with 60 youngsters participating.

Broadbent commented, “It’s been another very positive step in FIRL’s progression.

“It was great working with more new players, helping develop the sport at grassroots and with the next generation.”

FIRL will conduct a second series of camps, this time in the north east area, on 14-15 March, after which the expanded schedule for the U18 club competition will be released.

Rolleston added, “The aim of increasing last season’s three-team U18 competition to a six-team competition started well.

“There were some quality young players and we look forward to seeing their progress during the 2015 championship. I would like to think that some of the players we have seen over the weekend could be involved in the national men’s team over the next few years and, who knows, if Italy qualifies for the next Rugby League World Cup in 2017 they could find themselves on the field with some of the best players in the world.”
