USA FINALIZE SQUAD FOR AMERICAS CHAMPIONSHIP

Hull FC winger Bureta Faraimo, who scored 19 tries in 29 Super League matches this season, is the highest-profile name in USA’s 21-man playing squad for the 2018 Americas Championship, which will also act as qualifiers for the 2021 Rugby League World Cup.

The University of North Florida, Jacksonville, will host two double-header rounds on 13th and 17th November 2018, and in the opening fixtures the Hawks take on Chile, the winners facing either Jamaica or Canada.

Head coach Sean Rutgerson’s selection is a mix of players with previous international experience – Faraimo set to win his eighth cap, having made his debut during the side’s 32-20 win over Cook Islands at Bristol in the 2013 World Cup – and others in line to make their Test debut.

The squad contains nine domestic-based players from six clubs, and Rutgerson believes the squad is as strong a combination as possible that he, and assistant coach Brent Richardson, could select.

“I’m really happy with who we have and am more than confident they will be able to do the job for the USA,” he said.

“We have a lot more experience than last time, at the 2017 World Cup, and hopefully we are a lot fitter.

“We are expecting the other nations to be a whole lot better as well, so it should provide a great example of our game to all the fans here.”

JAMAICA FINALIZE SQUAD FOR AMERICAS CHAMPIONSHIP

Jamaica has confirmed their 21-man playing squad for the 2018 Americas Championship, which will also act as qualifiers for the 2021 Rugby League World Cup.

The University of North Florida, Jacksonville, will host two double-header rounds on 13th and 17th November 2018, and in the opening fixtures Jamaica take on Canada, the winners facing either hosts USA or Chile.

For the Reggae Warriors it is a case of marrying up cultures, with four players from the domestic competition – all from 2018 double winners Duhaney Park Red Sharks – joining the bulk from the British game, in what is their strongest squad ever-selected.

“We’ve been preparing for this for two years,” said head coach Romeo Monteith. “We’ve brought in professional help in Glen Morrison as manager and Jermaine Coleman as assistant coach.

“We’ve kept a core of UK-based players together for that time, which is key to our strategy to qualify. Parachuting the professional players in every four years has not worked.”

Monteith added: “This time around we should see a team that is more cohesive as there’s better chemistry.”

London-based Jermaine Coleman noted: “The boys have been working well and training hard together now for a few weeks.

“It’s a difficult time of year for all involved as the season has finished at their respective clubs and blokes are spread all over the country.

“However, it shows their desire to represent their country as we drive from both ends of the country to make the sessions happen – the unity amongst the group, with a single goal, is unbelievable.

“They are super-excited to get across and join the local players and get into the games.”

Leeds Rhino Ashton Golding played for Jamaica in France last year but this is first campaign and he cannot wait to get to Florida on a self-funded basis.

“I am very proud to be able to represent my heritage,” he said. “I’ve always had a keen eye on how the national team has done and for me to be able to play in what could be an historical World Cup qualifiers has always been a personal goal.

“I can’t wait to get into camp, we have been meeting weekly, going through some tough gym and field sessions, to make sure we are physically and mentally ready for the challenge ahead.”

Mirroring him back on the Caribbean island is centre Renaldo Wade who was part of the World Cup qualifying squad in 2015 that just lost out to USA.

“I’m looking to a great campaign, it was a pleasure even to get selected and I just want to be the best I can be for my team in whatever way they need me,” he noted.

“I’ve been doing a lot of strength work both on core and legs, and so far my preparation has been going well.”

CANADA FINALIZE SQUAD FOR AMERICAS CHAMPIONSHIP

Canada has confirmed their 21-man playing squad and backroom staff for the 2018 Americas Championship, which will also act as qualifiers for the 2021 Rugby League World Cup.

The University of North Florida, Jacksonville, will host two double-header rounds on 13th and 17th November 2018, and in the opening fixtures the Wolverines take on Jamaica, the winners facing either hosts USA or Chile.

Benjamin Fleming is the Canadian’s head coach, with Henry Miers as assistant. Daniel Tupou Kaloudonu also joins the coaching ranks after narrowly missing selection as player, with Paul Buchanan team manager, head trainer Simon Paige and Canada Ravens women’s physiotherapist, Ed Middleton completing the off-field line up.

“The selection process has been very tough,” confirmed Fleming. “Canada’s geography makes it difficult to view all players equally, and it’s a difficult vetting process to work through.”

“The selectors and coaches did see some great video of domestic and provincial games which was beneficial to establish transparency and fairness.”

Fleming added: “With the tools we had and the numerous people we spoke with, we feel we have done the best possible job to select the strongest squad.

“The team is representative of the type of depth Canada Rugby League is starting to develop and we also wanted to reward players for their firm commitment to this growing sport.

“With our first game being against a full-strength Jamaican side, we need every player common to the goal, which is winning a berth in our first ever World Cup, in England in 2021.”

EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP FRANCE 54 WALES 18 – Report

France head for their World Cup qualifying showdown with Ireland next Saturday in confident form, after a comprehensive nine-try win over Wales at the Stade Albert Domec, Carcassone,

Aurélien Cologni’s men dominated the opening exchanges and just after half time, the power of forwards Romain Navarette and skipper Jason Baitieri, allied to the guile of Tony Gigot – who finished with 18 points – and Theo Fages the decisive factors.

“We are happy because the players wanted to start the tournament well,” said Cologni. “It was a very important victory and we worked hard for it – we returned to French principles.”

Cologni added: “I was very pleased with our offensive side and how we retained our passion in the second half.

“Wales are building a team for the next World Cup, like us, they have some young quality players and can have a better vision for the future.”

France took a fourth minute lead when Gigot elected to kick a penalty after a high tackle, the full back’s grubber to the corner uncovering Paul Marcon for the first try on the left soon after, Gigot with the conversion from out wide.

Hakim Miloudi intercepted Josh Ralph’s pass to go 40 metres to the posts, Gigot’s goal making it 14-0 in as many minutes, as the hosts got off to the perfect start.

Wales exerted their first pressure capitalising on a French error, Rhys Williams denied a try after he was deemed to have knocked on in the act of scoring.

That proved to be a possible 12-point turnaround, Les Bleus marching up field on the back of a penalty and creating more space on the left for Toulouse winger Marcon to grab his second touchdown, Gigot again successful with the boot from wide out.

Centre Bastien Ader got through his man on the half hour to cross and at 26-0, the French were in complete control.

Wales, though, showed excellent resolve to get themselves back in the contest by the break. Chester Butler was stopped just short after a fine run, Curtis Davies was just held out, but the French defence could not deny the side-stepping Ralph, James Olds with the extras.

Right on half time, Rhodri Lloyd’s fine slipped pass saw skipper Elliot Kear cross, Olds landing the difficult goal.

France re-took control seven minutes into the second half, again exploiting the left, Marcon kicking inside for Gigot to gather.

Williams conceded a drop out from which Rhys Curran forced his way over, and four minutes later good interplay spilt the Welsh ranks, Wigan’s Morgan Escare winning the race to a delicate chip behind the visiting defence.

Dan Fleming and Ben Evans helped shore up the Welsh defence and the Dragons were rewarded for their endeavours when Olds, on debut, won the race to Lloyd’s hack forward from a French mistake, Olds with his third goal for a 10 point haul.

France finished strongly, Navarette bursting through and Lucas Albert’s grubber on the last play of the game, releasing Escare for his brace; Albert successful with the late goal kicking duties.

Wales head coach John Kear commented: “The French played really well. Obviously the likes of Gigot, Fages and Albert – and Escare on the wing – coupled with their experienced forwards – had too many smarts for our developing team – congratulations to them, I wish them well for the rest of the Championship.”

With proceeds from the gate money given to the Aude flooding disaster fund, €12,000 was raised.

EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP ROUND 1 – IRELAND 36 SCOTLAND 10 – Report

New Ireland head coach Stuart Littler, having taken over from Mark Aston, marked his first game in charge with a comfortable win at Santry’s Morton Stadium, to set the Wolfhounds on the road to 2021 World Cup qualification.

His men ran in seven tries, establishing a decisive lead by the break, with veteran skipper Liam Finn at the heart of their best work.

“It was an outstanding opening 40 minutes,” Littler said. “We even let them off the hook at times and could have been more ruthless. We knew, with the wind against, it was going to be a bit of a challenge in the second period especially as the guys haven’t played together for a while.

“We’ll build on that and I think we’ll get better by the week, I’m looking forward now to next week against France, that’s a massive game.”

Littler added: “It’s a good start, but that’s all it is. We’ve got a bit of a changing of the guard, I’m all for giving youth an opportunity and some lads took it with both hands.”

Scotland, who lost Lewis Tierney in the warm up, knocked on from the kick off but held out for close on quarter of an hour, Ireland opening the scoring when Finn’s kick to the corner was batted back by Ethan Ryan into the grateful arms of Tyrone McCarthy, Finn missing the conversion.

Three minutes later, Ryan scored himself, pouncing on a loose ball in the Scotland in-goal area after a mix-up by the visiting defenders, Finn again wide with the goal attempt.

Scotland came close on the half hour, debutant Nick Glohe breaking clear on a powerful run but just bundled in to touch by the Irish cover defence.

The Bravehearts were made to pay when, from a Greg McNally break, lively hooker Dec O’Donnell scooted from dummy half up the right and found a gap to dive over to mark his first cap, Finn adding the extras.

Just before the break, Finn’s excellent cut out pass found James Bentley – playing at centre – in space and his jinking run took him over from 20 metres, Finn making it 20-0 at the break with a touchline conversion.

Two minutes into the second period, Waterford winger Alan McMahon rescued a low pass from Bentley to go over in the left corner, Finn wide with the kick.

Scotland enjoyed their best spell soon after, two tries in eight minutes a reward for their persistence.

Glohe with a deserved try on debut when he finished a flowing left to right move to crash over, and skipper Ben Kavanagh made the most of a flat pass in midfield to step his way over, Ryan Brierley with the successful goal.

The final two scores went to young Wigan centre Jack Higginson, the first from another superbly timed Finn pass and, in the final minute, following a Finn high kick to the corner on the back of a tap penalty, Higginson winning the race to the ball.

“The start of the game really set a tone for us,” commented joint Scotland head coach Chris Chester. “We didn’t complete for three or four sets on the bounce and gave the Irish too much field position.”

“I was happy with the second half performance, it was a great response from the guys and something we can work with.

Chester added: “It’s certainly been an eye-opener for me on the preparation side of things and that’s something we need to get used to. Hopefully, we’ll be better for this outing.”

RLEF CELEBRATES MOST DIVERSE EVER MATCH OFFICIAL APPOINTMENTS FOR EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP

The 2018 European Championship match officials list has been confirmed, with the group drawn from seven of the RLEF’s member federations, the most diverse representation ever.

A number of graduates from the RLEFs part EU-funded technical development programmes will feature after the appointments were made by the recently formed RLEF Match Officials Panel, made up of Steve Ganson (RFL), Mohammed Drizza (FFRXIII) and Tom Mather (RLEF).

“It’s very pleasing to see such a number of federations being represented in the match officials appointments,” said match commissioner David Butler, also a graded referee. “The MOP was formed to create greater cooperation between The RLEF and key governing body partners to ensure a pathway across the continent, and it is already bearing fruit.”

The European Championship matches which kick off tomorrow (Saturday) also double as 2021 Rugby League World Cup qualifiers. Butler noted: “The RLEF has a target of at least one match official graduating from its various education programmes being involved in the 2021 Rugby League World Cup, and the appointments for this year’s European Championship point to that being achievable."

A Frenchman, Benjamin Casty – brother of Catalans Dragons skipper and recently retired international Remi – will referee a European Championship game for the first time since the RLEF was created.

Andrew Pilkington (Spain) will touch judge, whilst Jarda Bzoch (Czech Republic) will be one of the reserve officials as will Guido Bonatti (Italy). Both Pilkington and Bonatti have refereed Euro B and Euro C games this season. Irish duo Paul Causby and Eamonn Whelan, and Welshman Jamie Jones will also act as reserve officials.

The appointments also see the largest contingent of French officials selected for a European Championship, with six being involved. Furthermore, Geoffrey Poumes will also travel to the USA to be part of the MO squad for the 2021 RLWC Americas qualifying games.

The full match officials appointments are:

Ireland v Scotland
Referee: Tom Grant (England)
TJ: Jack Pullein (England)

TJ: Liam Moore (England)

Reserve: Paul Causby (Ireland)

FRANCE AND WALES NAME 19-MAN SQUADS FOR EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP CLASH

France and Wales have named 19-man squads for their clash at the Stade Albert Domec, in Carcassone tomorrow (Saturday, kick off 6pm CET) in the European Championship, which doubles as a qualifier for the 2021 Rugby League World Cup in England.

The French have been strengthened by the arrival of Wigan duo Morgan Escare and Romain Navarette after the pair became the first from the nation to play in – and win – a Super League Grand Final.

“The first game is the most important, this one will decide our chances of qualification and we will have to be at our best because the opposition are the defending European champions,” said French skipper, Paris-born Jason Baitieri.

“We are wary of the finishing threat of London’s Rhys Williams and I have always been an admirer of Gil Dudson, who has just signed to Salford. He was often injured this year at Widnes but is strong, and has the soul of a leader.

Baitieri continued: “However, I prefer to focus on our own strengths, Physically we are ready for the fight, and compared to the warm up match against England, we are better prepared and a much more united squad for being together.”

Stan Robin, who has been used as a full back, centre and winger, is expected to play in his preferred position in the halves. “My physical condition is perfect, the task ahead is difficult, but as with the other players in the squad from Toulouse, we are used to confronting those from the Championship who make up the backbone of the Welsh side and so we will not be disoriented.”

The Welsh flew out from Manchester airport this morning in good spirits according to their head coach John Kear. “We’ve had an excellent week of training and we’re all looking forward to getting started. We’ve got some new faces in a squad full of players who’ve come through the Welsh systems; there is some real passion amongst them to wear the shirt.

“All of the players have trained really well this week and are raring to go. We’re expecting a tough match over in France as they’ve got plenty of quality in their side, but we’re hoping to put in a good display and start the tournament with a positive result.”

The match will be streamed on the BBC red button.

IRELAND AND SCOTLAND NAME 19-MAN SQUADS FOR EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP CLASH

Ireland and Scotland have named 19-man squads for their clash at the Morton Stadium, Santry on Saturday (kick off 2pm) in the European Championship, which doubles as a qualifier for the 2021 Rugby League World Cup in England.

Wakefield signing George King, fresh from playing for Warrington in the Super League Grand Final, is included for the Wolfhounds alongside new club mates, skipper and most-capped Irish player Liam Finn, and Scott Grix.

The match will see new coaching teams on both sides following the 2017 World Cup, with former Ireland international Stuart Littler taking the reins of the hosts.

“We are looking forward to what is set to be an exciting tournament,” said Littler. “Having our opening game – and also my debut as head coach – on home soil is great as we look to set the tone against quality opponents. Over the past few seasons, Scotland have shown that they are a force to be reckoned with in international rugby league but we know that, if we perform, we have enough quality within our side to compete with anyone.”

Littler, who will also be looking to the leadership of Salford’s Tyrone McCarthy, added: “This year’s squad is a great mix of youth and experience as we look to develop towards the next World Cup. I am excited by the future of the international game in Ireland and we aim to enjoy ourselves throughout the next three weeks.”

New Scotland coaching duo Chris Chester – who will come up against his trio of Trinity men – and John Duffy have seven potential debutants in their squad – heritage players Luke Westman and Nick Glohe, Keighley duo Davey Dixon and Kieran Moran, Newcastle’s Sam Luckley, and domestic players Matt Hogg and Murray Mitchell – although they may be forced into a late change as Lewis Tierney is having a further head scan tomorrow.

Chester commented: “We are all looking forward to seeing the guys get out on the pitch in Dublin. We have already had two good days training this week and the squad is coming together well and looking sharp and ready to go.

“It is six years since I was involved with Scotland and I am very excited about being so again. International rugby league needs to be supported and it is great to see the levels of commitment to the Bravehearts’ cause from the players, staff and other volunteers. We expect a very tough game against Ireland, the two squads look well matched.”

Chile Rugby League ready to enter world stage

PRESS RELEASE – FOR IMMEDIATE DISTRIBUTION

CHILE ENTER WORLD STAGE

Chile is hoping make rugby league history as they prepare for the 2018 Americas Championship, which will also act as a qualifier for the 2021 Rugby League World Cup in England.

The University of North Florida, Jacksonville, will stage two double-header rounds on 13th and 17th November 2018, and in the opening fixtures the South American newcomers take on hosts USA, the winners facing either Jamaica or Canada.

It has been a relatively quick journey for Chile to these qualifiers, and an unexpected one. “When we started gathering interested players, our earliest thought was that Argentina and Uruguay would lead the way from the outset because of their strong rugby union background,” Latin American Rugby League co-founder Robert Burgin said.

“Then we thought Brazil might succeed because of their enormous population, or perhaps Guyana because they had success in sevens rugby and had naturally powerful physiques. Even 12 months after the sport started a concerted effort to engage people from Central and South America, it still wasn’t clear how dominantly Chile would emerge in the region.”

Chile’s dominance is underpinned by an unbeaten record in 13-a-side rugby league against all other Latin America nations over the past three years. They have also only been beaten once, in the final of a 9-a-side tournament in Miramar, Argentina in 2016, to the host nation.

As a result of the Pinochet regime in Chile, by the early-mid 1990s there were 20,000 Chilenos living in Australia, most settling on the eastern seaboard where rugby league is the dominant winter sport. Amongst them was Ernesto ‘Ernie’ Tobar, who later went on to become a lower grade player with the Penrith Panthers.

When Latin American Rugby League began creating momentum five years ago, Tobar was a central figure and was the first Latin American-born coach of the organisation.

According to Burgin: “Another family which migrated around the same time was that of Rodrigo ‘Rod’ Millar, who played country rugby league throughout Australia and is now one of the directors and head coach of the Chilean Weichafes. The sons of Ernesto and Rodrigo – Brandon Tobar, Brad Millar and Trent Millar – are all central players in the unprecedented quest to get Chile to rugby league’s biggest tournament.”

Interest spread back to their homeland, with Rodrigo Millar returning to Chile several times per year to help encourage a dedicated core of domestic players around the southern city of Los Angeles.

Two domestic officials who have been tireless in their work for the sport have been Guillermo Artiaga and Ronald Soto Badilla, helping it to spread the 2,000km along the elongated nation to Antofagasta in the north.

“Pioneering player Jonathan Espinoza also conducted two development tours in successive seasons, helping to engage schools, media and distributing jerseys, boots and equipment,” Burgin notes. “Chile now has in excess of a dozen teams, holds a representative ‘Origin’ match between its northern and southern regions, and has a strong interest in women’s rugby league.”

Chile also has a significant Polynesian community, numbering around 6,000 of the 18 million total population. Within the Chilean squad are players with mixed heritage from Samoa and the Cook Islands, as well as Melanesian influences from Fiji and Papua New Guinea.

The most famous rugby league player of Chilean descent, Marcelo Montoya of Canterbury Bulldogs, is of shared Fijian heritage.
