NETHERLANDS AND NORWAY NAME SQUADS

Netherlands and Norway have named their squads for the men’s senior international, to be played for world ranking points, at Sassenheim on Sunday 30 September 2023 (kick off at 2pm local time). Netherlands’ first international was staged 20 years ago against Scotland ‘A’ in the town and this will be the first return there since that game.

The hosts have ten players in line to make their debuts; James Adams, Lars Mudde, Lucas Thomson, Tom van Bokhoven, Maas van der Reek, Harry Mulligan, Mitch Donnelly, Tom Turnock, Soren van der Linden and Rowan Schuiling.

Head coach, Dave Hunter, commented: “We’ll be looking to get our international campaign off to a positive start and set some standards. Unfortunately, the loss of our captain Daniel de Ruiter is a massive blow, but I’m confident others will step up in his place. Tom van Bokhoven comes into the captain’s role and I’m sure he’ll do a fantastic job, it shows the player depth that we have in the Netherlands. We’re really looking forward to seeing how the younger boys perform who were all outstanding during the domestic season.”

Norway have selected an all domestic-based squad with three potential debutants included in Simon Olsen, Alexander Ponton and Isuf Peci and the squad comes off having been in camp together for the first time under new head coach Liam Stead, who took over from Hunter.

“I am excited about the team we are slowly becoming and how well we are meshing together,” said Stead. “The Netherlands is going to be a stern test so we are expecting a huge challenge, but one I expect us to rise to. The match will prove the perfect testing ground for us as we look to see where we are and build towards the exciting future we have.”

Last weekend the Parizov family provided a father and son who played for Bulgaria against Malta and the same could happen for the Vikings with Eric "Sonny" Mellor, who is among Norway’s most experienced players, set to turn out with son Jymaal Sonny Mellor, the pair play together at Lillestrøm Lions.

Canada Ravens win inaugural Women’s Americas North Rugby League Championship

PRESS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE DISTRIBUTION

FROM: ERL MEDIA DEPARTMENT

DATE: 28 September 2023

RAVENS WIN INAUGURAL WOMEN’S AMERICAS NORTH CHAMPIONSHIP

Canada won the inaugural Women’s Americas North Championship with a comprehensive 64-2 triumph over hosts Jamaica at a thundery MONA Bowl at the University of West Indies in Kingston. The Ravens ran in 12 tries in a match that was delayed and then interrupted by storms, the sides brought off in the first half for 15 minutes because of lightning.

Canada got off to the perfect start, stand off Dani Franada – who finished with 20 points including eight goals – charging down a clearance kick and winning the race to the ball. They added a further five tries in a 12-minute purple patch before the break, winger Ferris Sandboe and Fedelia Angeles, who was excellent off the bench, with the first of their two each.

The Ravens posted 32 points in each half, fullback Petra Woods also claiming a brace. Jamaica, in only their second game, kicked a penalty three minutes from time following an obstruction as a reward for their efforts in the tough conditions.

Angeles said: “I want to thak Jamaica for hosting an amazing tournament. It’s a privilege to have been playing here with the Ravens. We’re working so hard to grow our domestic league back home and this helps us to keep moving forward.”

Her head coach, Mike Castle, added: “After a really scrappy start we were able to regain our composure and put in a solid performance. It was stop-start thanks for the weather, so I was happy we were able to stay switched on. To be the inaugural America’s north champions is a great reward for all the hard work we put in. We have really enjoyed our time in Jamaica and look forward to continuing this rivalry.”

Jamaica’s scrum half, Alicia Richards, who has been instrumental in establishing women’s rugby league in the nation, noted: “I’d like to thank all the fans, my team mates and the administrative staff for their efforts. We want to grow the sport for women with more exposure, sponsorship and people playing and this has been a great start.”

Captain Shanique Smith said: “We put up a great fight and I’m proud of all the girls for going up against the seventh ranked team in the world. We exceeded our expectations considering we had only three months to prepare, and both games showed promising development. We will become a strong contender in the years to come. I can see how we’ve improved since the first game against the USA. We went back to the drawing board and addressed some of our errors, which showed in the second game. Many of our players are young, so we anticipate significant growth.”

Canada defeat USA in game 2 of Women’s Americas North Rugby League Championship

PRESS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE DISTRIBUTION

CANADA DEFEAT USA IN GAME 2 OF WOMEN’S AMERICAS NORTH CHAMPIONSHIP

Canada won their opening game in the Women’s Americas North Championship, scoring five tries – all converted by Dani Franada – to overcome USA 30-4 at the MONA Bowl, University of West Indies, Kingston, Jamaica.

In warm and wet conditions, the Ravens – playing for the first rime since 2021 Rugby League World Cup – included St Helens star Chantelle Crowl on debut and were never behind. They only secured victory, however, when hooker Gabrielle Hindley dived over from dummy half with 14 minutes to go following a powerful drive from Liz Steele.

Steele’s late score inflated the margin of victory, the Hawks having shown great resolve after beating Jamaica on Saturday. Canada now need to defeat the hosts tomorrow (Wednesday) to lift the inaugural trophy.

Player of the match, Canada’s Megan Pakulis who crossed just after the half hour for a vital try, said: “We’ve adjusted to the heat very well. The Americans gave us a tough challenge and showed us what we will need to work on before Jamaica. We’re looking forward to the game against them in a tournament that is showing the growth of the women’s game in the region.”

Ravens head coach Mike Castle added: “It’s been an awesome experience and allowed us to build on our World Cup experience. I’m looking forward to the final game and I’m sure the squad will perform and claim the first title.”

Scrum half Paris Hart, USA co-captain, noted: “It’s been a phenomenal experience playing here in Jamaica, with several of the squad picking up their first caps. I’m very proud of the team for their performances.”

Adrian Cooney, Hawks’ head coach, said: “I want to thank the group. We’ve worked very hard to prepare for the tournament. We executed very well on Saturday but struggled a little bit today against Canada. Nonetheless, it was a superb 80-minute effort. Women’s rugby league deserves more tournaments like this so we grow the game and continue to build profile and sponsorship.”

She added of player of the match, fullback Dayes: “She was amazing, she wasn’t feeling too well in the lead up and we were really worried about her, we gave her a bunch of electrolytes and she slept a lot but she is incredibly reliable and we are so proud of her.”

PRESS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE DISTRIBUTION

POLAND 28 CZECH REPUBLIC 36 REPORT

Two early tries in four minutes from Vrchlab Mad Squirrels winger Matej Schejbal set the platform for a 36-28 Czech Republic win against Poland, at the Majkowski Wembley Stadium in Kalisz, in a mens senior international.

In a terrific contest, played in great spirit, Poland opened the scoring in the first minute, full back Fabian Glinkowski gliding over, but the Czechs hit back with 22 unanswered points, David Belohlavek with the first of his two tries and stand off Jakub Hudrlik crossing to go with his total of four goals.

Local player ukasz Kostecki from Husaria Kalisz replied on the stroke of half time to make it 22-10 at the break, and in the second half Jonathan Tutak and back rower Micha Krzypkowski narrowed the gap further, only late tries from Tomas Kasik and Barbarians Letohrads Josef Brynda – sandwiching one by Tomasz Zerbe for the hosts – sealing the win.

Poland joint head coach Colin Baker said: We are very proud of the guys and especially with the team being entirely comprised of domestic players who gave it their all. It was a great experience for everyone involved and congratulations to our neighbours Czech Republic on the win in a wonderful contest.

Czech Republic caretaker head coach, Tomas Adamec, noted: Our main aim was to give opportunities to new players, and they showed their skills and gained the experience which is good. We started strongly and dominated early, a few mistakes and errors meant the score was closer, but we finished strongly in the final 20 minutes. Poland played very well and have improved a lot which is good for rugby league in central Europe.
