DUTCH RUGBY LEAGUE PLAN BIG YEAR

The Nederlandse Rugby League Bond, which has been granted Observer status of the RLEF since February 2012, is targeting 2014 as the year in which it will significantly develop rugby league in the Low Countries.

The six-strong board of directors has, to date, focused on ensuring a sustainable foundation based on good governance and has now set itself a series of short and long-term objectives.

Principal among those is the creation of four rugby league clubs, officially registered under Dutch law, and fielding them in a 9s competition later this year, as a precursor to a full 13-a-side championship which has so far never been attempted in Holland.

President Timo Meinders, who took over last year from the pioneering Jason Bruygoms– now NRLB development manager – is also leading the project to have NRLB accepted by the national sports authority, the Nederlandse Olympisch Comité-Nederlandse Sport Federatie (NOCNSF).

“The goals of 2014 will help us achieve the long term result,” said Meinders. “Building the house with bricks, stone by stone. The NRLB and rugby league players are doing this with pride, passion and love for the sport.”

NRLB is also mentoring the younger Belgian association in its own technical development, in partnership with the Federation Française de Rugby à Paris Treize.

The tripartite project begins in Delft in April, with seven Belgian coach and match official tutors joining leading French personnel Thierry Alibert and Thierry Dumaine as well as RLEF staff.

SPANISH RUGBY LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP KICKS OFF

History was made on Sunday as the first Spanish rugby league championship kicked off with a match between Valencian Warriors and CRAC in Muro de Alcoy, Alicante.

Around 300 fans attended at the La Llometa stadium to see CRAC win 28-18 in the Campeonato Nacional de Rugby League.

Victorious coach Juan Cotes said, “This was a really hard-fought victory against a strong team. This competition will be very good and I think rugby league in Spain has a great future.”

His opposite number Javi Poveda was equally encouraged, “I think the game was electric,” he noted. “They worked very hard and have improved a lot since the last time we played in a friendly and it’s just left for me to congratulate them. The AERL [Asociacion Espanol Rugby League] and RLEF are working well in the organisation of the championship in Spain. It will be very good to see more matches like this.”

North Leeds Leopards rugby league club move to new venue

NORTH LEEDS LEOPARDS PRESS RELEASE

LEOPARDS MOVE TO NEW VENUE

Thanks to the efforts of all involved with the club from its inception in May 2010 – especially the parents and volunteers – North Leeds Leopards have announced important news about their future.

Because of their steady and planned growth and subsequent success, which now sees them running four sides in leagues together with others participating in numerous festivals and other appearances, catering from five-year-olds to U14s, the Leopards have now instituted the next phase of their development.

The club has signed an initial 12-month agreement to move to refurbished Moortown RUFC to play and train at the newly re-named Far Moss Sports Grounds which will carry their signage and has three pitches.

“The committee are convinced, having undertaken significant assessment of our needs, that this is the right next step for the club,” said chairman Phil Caplan.

“Far Moss is becoming a multi-sport venue with various partners, a gymnasium and impressive social facilities that include the screening of rugby league. We fit in with the ethos – especially playing in the summer – and feel very much at home already.”

The Leopards plan to be playing their first matches at Far Moss on the opening weekend in May.

RUGBY LEAGUE EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP C FIXTURES RELEASED

The Rugby League European Federation has released the 2014 European Championship C fixtures with the Czech Republic, Greece and Malta all set to play one another for the first time.

The competition is the successor to the European Bowl and is linked to Euro B with Ukraine, the 2013 Bowl winners, gaining promotion last year.

Malta, ranked 14th in Europe will start as favourites, with players of the calibre of Wakefield’s Super League star Jarrod Sammut to call on.

Their captain Chris Parker said, “It’s going to be great to lead out Malta for the fourth season. We can’t wait to play some new opposition in Greece and the Czech Republic. Both the domestic-based players and those playing overseas are looking forward to linking up again in preparation."

2011 and 2012 Bowl winners, the Czech Republic, will enter with a new national team head coach, Vrchlabi’s David Lahr taking over from Andy Mulhall. The Czech board’s focus is to improve the standard of the domestic competition and, as a consequence, the national team.

“In the past the national team had been selected with short preparation,” explained Lahr. “Nowadays we want to focus on long-term development of the national team squad. A number of training days have been built into our season fixtures. We are investing time and effort into talented youth.”

Newcomers Greece played a first official Test in Budapest last year and have come a long way in a short space of time with the inaugural five-team Greek Rugby League Championship scheduled to end in May, a month before the national team travels across the Mediterranean to kick off the tournament in Malta.

“All those involved with the Hellenic Federation of Rugby League are very excited that we are entering the official international scene,” said federation president Tasos Pantazidis. “The European Championship C will be both a challenge and motivation to our athletes, coaches and staff to become better. Improvement is our aim and the competition will offer us that potential.”

2014 EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP C – Schedule

Malta v Greece – 28 June, Pembroke

Czech Republic v Malta – 12 July, Havlichkuv Brod

Greece v Czech Republic – 11 October, Athens

EUROPEAN UNION-BACKED RUGBY LEAGUE PROJECT GETS UNDERWAY IN CZECH REPUBLIC

The European Rugby League Leadership Devolution Project is underway, with the Czech Rugby League Association hosting a four-day match officials seminar attended by English, Swedish and Maltese delegates.

The tutor training and assessing was linked with the annual season-opening CZRLA 9s tournament in Hradec Kralove and culminated in the delivery of a Level 1 Match Officials course.

The project is the largest international technical development initiative in rugby league history, with over €330.000 of investment – €195.000 of which is from the European Union – spread over 17 participant countries – whose objective is to produce fully trained and qualified match official and coach tutors.

The concept is based around clusters of nations and a mentoring system. In this cluster the English Rugby Football League mentors the Czechs who will lead on the technical delivery in the first phases of the project, before themselves playing a mentor role with the Maltese and Swedes.

“I came away from it a lot more knowledgeable and practical experience as a tutor,” said Swedish Rugby League tutor-candidate Rajendra Shah. He was accompanied by his colleague Paris Ghavidel-Asgari.

Serbian referee Aleksandar Markovic, now residing in Malta and the lead official in Malta’s 2014 Dove Men+Care Championship added: "I had a great time in the Czech Republic; I learned so much from my tutors. I am never going to forget my time on this course." He was joined by Malta Rugby League official Anthony Micallef.

Lead CZRLA tutor Petr Sedina, who will attend the activity in Malta, was satisfied with the outcome which saw 16 new Czech officials qualified. “It was a great help to CZRLA domestic activities. We hope this will assist us to build a platform to expand CZRLA even further going forward,” he commented.

RLEF match official squad members Phil Smith and Paul Stockman oversaw the weekend’s activities. Smith said, “The tutor training went really well. We were able to spend lots of time with Raj, Alex and Pais. They did the full course; outside practical sessions; refereed and assisted in sessions with the Czechs.”

Rhodes Knights into Greece rugby league championship final

HELLENIC FEDERATION OF RUGBY LEAGUE – PRESS RELEASE

Date: 21 March 2014

RHODES KNIGHTS INTO GREECE RUGBY LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL

With their fifth straight victory, Rhodes Knights has booked a place in the inaugural Greek Rugby League Championship final in May.

The Knights now stand on 15 points, three ahead of second placed Aris Petroupolis in the five-team league.

AEK Kokkinias are in third spot with six points followed by Pegasus Neos Kosmos and Promitheas Rendi.

“Before the start of the season we prepared the team using a good base of experienced players with the addition of new ones of some potential who seemed to want to get to know the sport,” explained Knights coach Mihalis Chatziioannou.

“The team became even stronger and more solid as the season went on. I’m very proud of my players, the way they played in every match and of course for securing our place in the championship final,” he added.

“We earned something more than victories through these games; my players got experience, especially the young ones, like Panagiotis Lambousis, Stefanos Bastas, Alvaro Zota and Nikos Bosmos. These players reacted in a mature way and they are also possible for the national team.

“Our next target is forming a full club, having women and kids teams.”

Chatziioannou’s is the only side with a positive for-and-against point’s difference having amassed a staggering 334 and conceded only 48. The island team is now preparing to finish off the season with three home games against Pegasus, AEK and Prometheus – making a perfect season a plausible target.

Fourteen regular season matches have been played so far, with six remaining.

Hopeful finalists AEK and Aris have played each other twice with both clinching a narrow home win, Aris by 32-24 and AEK victorious 24-20.

The joint venture beat Lokomotiva Beroun 24-8 in their opening game, Beroun’s first defeat in any form of rugby league since they were defeated by the Pardubice Jets in the 2011 CZRLA Grand Final.

Pardubice-Chrudim and Beroun subsequently recorded close victories over Havlickuv Brod Eagles to complete the Pool A games.

In Pool B, host club Slavia Hradec Kralove defeated Mikulov Roosters and local rivals Vrchlabi Mad Squirrels,
