Matt Bowen visit to Serbia hailed a huge success

PRESS RELEASE – IMMEDIATE DISTRIBUTION

MATTY BOWEN VISIT TO SERBIA HAILED A BIG SUCCESS

Wigan Warriors and former Australia full back Matt Bowen made a huge impression in rugby league circles in Serbia, having spent the weekend in Belgrade as a guest of the Australian Embassy there.

Bowen was on hand on ANZAC centenary weekend to lend his support to a children’s rugby league festival in the capital, as well as appearing on television shows helping to showcase the sport in the country.

“It was a great honour to be there and be able to help promote rugby league,” Bowen said. “The game is obviously spreading all over the world and I enjoyed a chance to come here and help it grow.”

Over 200 Serbian children got to meet one of their heroes in the flesh as part of a pilot project administered by the Serbian Rugby League Federation (SRLF) and Australian Embassy in Serbia to teach schoolchildren in Belgrade the basics of the sport.

SRLF president Predrag Pantic noted, “It was wonderful to have Matt here to witness what we are doing. Through the programme we are offering a chance for both boys and girls aged 10 to 14 to see what rugby league is and, if they are interested, they can practice it for free during the school year.

“With the help of Australian Embassy we are able to cover elementary schools all over the Belgrade but with the accent on poor suburban areas where kids don’t have much of chance for sport. Hopefully some of them will become full time players one day.”

Pantic added, “Just having such a star player willing to come across Europe to hang out with them is really a big thing.”

“Australia is a flagship rugby league nation and we are happy that we can help our friends get involved in this great game,” said Australian Ambassador in Serbia, Julia Feeney.

“The ANZAC remembrance is an extremely important date for our country but also we remember that others made big sacrifices too, Serbs particularly. We are happy to get involved in this programme and will continue supporting the SRLF in the future .”

The aim of the Serbian Federation now, this visit also coinciding with the 61st anniversary of the first rugby league match staged in the country, is to qualify for the 2017 World Cup in the Antipodes, and they have another fan who will follow their quest.

“They even tried to sign me up,” joked Bowen. “I really hope they can succeed, it’s going to be tough, but I saw great enthusiasm. Certainly playing in the World Cup would be a huge achievement for Serbia and I’ll be rooting for them all the way.”

Matt Bowen travels to Serbia to boost school’s rugby league and pay ANZAC tribute

PRESS RELEASE – IMMEDIATE DISTRIBUTION
From: Serbian Rugby League Federation, Belgrade
Date: 24th April 2015

MATT BOWEN TRAVELS TO SERBIA

Serbian rugby league will receive a major boost this weekend with the arrival of Wigan Warriors’ star full back Matt Bowen.

Thanks to the support of Super League and Wigan Warriors, Bowen is visiting Serbia to promote their Schools Rugby League Programme, a pilot project which is part-funded by the Australian Embassy in Belgrade.

The project began on 20 January in primary schools in the capital with the purpose of teaching children the basics of the sport. Bowen, who played for Australia, will assist in a youth tournament to be held tomorrow (Saturday) at the FK Zemun stadium (14.00 GMT).

The tournament will also mark the centenary of ANZAC Day, being exactly 100 years from the landings at Gallipoli, one of the key battles of the First World War.

Coincidentally, the date also celebrates 61 years since the first official rugby league match was played in Serbia.

Bowen is one of the biggest rugby league stars to visit the country as SRLF vice president, Nebojša Sretenović acknowledges. “This is a huge honour for Serbia Rugby League to welcome such a wonderful player and one of the most respected men in the sport, on and off the field.”

“His playing record at club and representative level is among the best and he is very active in the Australian Government’s campaign ‘Close the Gap’, which aims to increase the life of the Australia indigenous people.”

Sretenović added, “Matt will be arriving with his wife and two children and will have a full schedule during this historic visit.

“As one of the initiators of it, the Australian Ambassador in Serbia, Julia Feeney, will be the main host for the Bowen family. It is scheduled for Matt to visit the headquarters of SRLF in Belgrade, he will have a couple of TV appearances, but the main event is the youth tournament.

“The programme currently involves about 200 boys and girls aged 10 to 14 years who were given the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the rugby league and then train for free, thanks to SRLF and with the support of Australian Embassy.”

The Schools Rugby League Programme is designed in accordance with the Strategy for Development of Sports 2014-2018 which was adopted by the Government of the Republic of Serbia and supported by the Serbian Ministry of Sports and Youth, and the Ministry of Education as a Secretariat for Youth and Sports of the City of Belgrade.

It is based on the LTAD (Long Term Athlete Development) plan designed by the Australian Institute of Sport, where the emphasis is on children learning about the sport through play and fun.

DUBAI TO HOST 2017 RUGBY LEAGUE WORLD CUP QUALIFIER

Dubai Sports City, which is hosting games in the new UAERL Nissan Cup, will also be the venue for a 2017 World Cup qualifier later this year.

The winner-takes-all Middle East & Africa Test between South Africa and Lebanon will be played there on Friday 30th October and will decide who becomes the eighth nation to qualify for the competition which will be held in Australia and New Zealand in two years’ time, .

Maqbul Dudhia, General Manager of Sports Business, Dubai Sports City said, “Dubai Sports City is delighted to welcome rugby league to Dubai.

“It is an exciting global sport and will sit well alongside the other major sports that are already played across our venues.

MEA Director Remond Safi commented; “Everyone is very excited about the prospect of bringing a first full international to Dubai and it’s great that the first ever Middle East/Africa World Cup berth will be decided in one of the region’s most established event hubs.

“There are a lot of opportunities for rugby league in the UAE and the region and I am sure that this will be the first step in a long and fruitful relationship.”

Lebanon RL Federation president Mohamed Habbous noted, “Over the last three years the LRLF has had to fight an uphill battle to maintain all its activities.

“However, with the upcoming World Cup qualifier versus South Africa, we have a chance to take the sport to another level.

RUGBY LEAGUE IRELAND ANNOUNCE MAJOR SPONSORSHIP DEAL

Rugby League Ireland has confirmed that their 2015 season will be sponsored by international pub chain McGettigan’s.

The agreement will see the McGettigan’s branding on all the teams involved in rugby league in the country including community clubs, schools, students, State of Origin sides, wheelchair and the senior international team.

It also sees rugby league coming to the historic Carlisle Grounds in Bray, where the Student 4 Nations tournament will be held.

Speaking at the announcement, Rugby League Ireland director Richard Egan said, “RLI are delighted to announce McGettigan’s as our title sponsor and we are thrilled with the opportunities that this presents us in our further development of the sport in Ireland.

“McGettigan’s is a company that is expanding around the world and is at an exciting time in its growth and there are parallels between our organizations. Rugby league was first played in Dublin around the time that Jim McGettigan opened his first bar and now we are both looking to the future.”

Dennis McGettigan, CEO of McGettigan’s added, “We are extremely excited to team up with Rugby League Ireland. Sport is a massive part of what we do and having the McGettigan’s logo on the Irish team kits is something we are very proud of. We hope this is the start of a long and wonderful relationship with RLI.”

The 2015 McGettigan’s All Ireland League will start on 9 May with a McGettigan’s 9’s tournament; the respective McGettigan’s Ulster, Leinster and Munster championships kicking off the following week and culminating in the All Ireland Grand Final on the 1 August.

Bray will host the Student 4 Nations from 14-19 June with teams from England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales competing. The Royal Hotel Bray will host the nations and the games will take place at the Carlisle Grounds on the Sunday, Tuesday and Friday of that week.

After the completion of the domestic season, the McGettigan’s State Of Origin will be held with the Republic of Ireland Eagles looking to retain their title against the Northern Ireland Elks. A Leinster venue will host one game on 8 August with the return fixture in Northern Ireland the following week, after which senior international sides will be chosen of both domestic players to face developing European nations and the for the 2015 European Championship, which Ireland lost on point’s difference last year.

All of the matches are seen as part of the build up to the 2016 European Qualifiers, which will see Ireland seeded, for the World Cup in 2017.

McGettigan’s Pub was first opened in Ireland in the 1960’s on Queen Street in Dublin by Jim McGettigan. The business now has outlets in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Donegal and soon Limerick.
