VISITORS RED STAR WIN PERUN CUP AS RUGBY LEAGUE BOOSTED IN BULGARIA

Bulgarian Rugby League has received a major boost following the first international tri-sided club tournament, held in Pernik.

Newly established Valqcite Pernik hosted rivals Lokomotive Sofia and top Serbian side Red Star Belgrade with the inaugural staging of the Perun Cup.

Each team played the other in matches over 20 minute halves with the more experienced Serbians coming out on top. They had to come from behind to defeat Pernik 24-10 after having trailed 10-8 at the turnaround, and defeated Sofia 36-6.

In the derby to finish the contests, Pernik – willed on by the vociferous home crowd – defeated Sofia 28-8 to crown a tremendous day, backed by the Municipality of Pernik.

It was deemed such a success that Red Star president Željko Delić confirmed afterwards that the Perun Cup would become an annual tournament, after all the teams agreed to return next year.

“We are thankful for the invite, it was a great trip and a very useful test for our team in preparation for the second half of the Serbian domestic season.” said Delić. “Serbian Rugby League has a task of helping to develop neighbouring countries and, in the future, we are hopeful that this tournament will attract more teams.”

He also confirmed that Red Star has brokered a future rugby league club in the Serbian border town Dimitrovgrad, which will be established by both the Serbian and Bulgarian federations.

Atlanta Rhinos win first USA rugby league championship crown

ATLANTA RHINOS WIN FIRST USA NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP

A hat trick from Terrance Williams saw Atlanta Rhinos pick up their first-ever domestic championship, as they defeated New York Knights 32-18 to take the Grand Final at Life University, Atlanta.

In an enthralling encounter in front of a packed crowd, the Rhinos came from behind to make history, captain Nick Newlin commenting: “This was the toughest game of club rugby league I’ve ever played in. This is all we wanted, we’ve been here for four years and this is what we’ve been playing for.”

Atlanta started slowly and quickly found themselves behind when Alex Foster opened the scoring for the visitors finishing off a fine expansive move, Jovanny Perez converting to establish a 6-0 lead.

The hosts gradually played themselves back into the game, Nick Barthel crossing for the first of his two tries and they built a 16-6 lead at the break with further scores to Max Pierce and Williams’ first.

Neil Thorman’s try and another Perez goal narrowed the lead back to four points just after the break, and the Rhinos were further handicapped when Tomu Osborne was sent off. But despite that and the heat, Atlanta extended their advantage as Barthel and Williams again crossed, Joe Cowley converting both to make it 28-12.

USA Hawks international Curtis Cunz gave hope to the Knights when he went over to bring the deficit back to 10 points, but Williams had the final say with his treble to see the Rhinos home.

Atlanta’s Hiko Malu was named MVP and their outstanding forward Salesi Tongamoa announced his retirement from the sport as he collected his winners medal.

“It was a high quality game, as you would expect in a national championship,” said Atlanta head coach Jordan Smedley. “I couldn’t be prouder of the group. Our attitude and commitment to each other, especially defensively, was outstanding. To win a national championship having to play with 12 men for the best part of 40 minutes typifies just how resilient we are. It was an historic moment for our great club, to win a national championship in only our fourth season is incredible.”

Jamaica rugby league triumph in historic first home Test match

PRESS RELEASE – IMMEDIATE DISTRIBUTION

From: Jamaica Rugby League Association

Date: 27 August, 2017

JAMAICA WIN HISTORIC HOME TEST

Jamaica defeated Canada 28-14 in the second match in the 2017 Americas Championships in the Reggae Warriors’ first home Test, held at the Mona Bowl, University of West Indies, Kingston.

A severe thunderstorm before kick off saw the game delayed by 15 minutes, but not even the heavy showers could dampen the spirit of both teams and the passionate supporters eager to witness history.

Jamaica opened the scoring in the third minute through fullback Joseph Shae, Canada responding shortly after when centre Rick Schouten crashed over in the right corner, Denny McCarthy converting for a 6-4 Wolverines lead.

Doncaster’s Aaron Jones-Bishop then released flyer Kenneth Walker twice then on the left for tries for the hosts and stand off Fabion Turner scored a superb solo effort from 30 metres, Jones-Bishop converting to give the Reggae Warriors an 18-6 lead at the break.

Canada cut the deficit shortly after the re-start when veteran winger Tony Felix crashed over on the right edge to make it 18-10 .

Jamaica’s Kareen Harris scored next but Canada again responded, this time through hooker Jack Couzens to make it 22-14 and set up a tense finish.

Both teams stood firm in defence but Jamaica debutant Steve Miller sent the crowd into rapture when he recovered a chip kick from Shae on half way and raced untouched to the try line, Jones-Bishop converting to seal a tremendous win.

“The energy from the fans was phenomenal, they pushed the players to their capacity,” commented Jamaica head coach Romeo Monteith. “Hats off to Canada who stuck to the task and never gave up. As for the Jamaica lads, they were focused and confident, their execution was pretty good throughout playing to our advantage, our pace out wide. The forwards were solid in the middle and that gave us our platform.”

CZECH REPUBLIC SUCCESSFULLY HOSTS LEVEL 2 MATCH OFFICIAL COURSE

Swedish, French, English and Czech match officials have met in Chrudim for a four-day RLEF Level 2 match official course, as part of the EU-funded Training and Education Portal project.

The newly instituted course was overseen by RLEF MO tutor Phil Smith. “From the intensity and detail of the debate, it’s clear that the new Level 2 course delivered on its objectives,” said Smith. “The candidates worked long hours to complete all the tasks and deserve credit for the way they set about tackling the content. It was a positive learning experience for us all and proof that sharing our knowledge collectively will ultimately help raise all our standards.”

Lukas Hergott and Ondrej Preininger led, although all the European officials delivered one module, with Preininger achieving his Level 1 educator qualification. He now joins Hergott and Jaroslav Bzoch in the Czech Rugby League Association’s match official education department.

Paris Ghavidel-Asgari represented the Svenska Rugby League Forening, while Jerome Cavalli and Jose Perreira were observing on behalf of the French Federation with Perreira, who has officiated in two World Cups, able to offer valuable insight into elite level performance. France is due to host its own Level 2 course next year.

“The mix of delivery clearly illustrated the key features required to referee,” said Cavalli. “We had extra practise on the field and we all gained out of it especially with regard to the motivations required to become a top level official.”

The TEP is a three-year, €723.000 investment into capacity building through good governance and technical training, funded by €466.000 from the EU’s Erasmus+ project and the remainder from the RLIF and five of its full members. It is intended to build the knowledge and skills of the RLEF’s 21 European members, divided into six regional clusters, through high quality training and mentoring, while granting opportunities to share experiences amongst fellow Europeans dedicated to rugby league development.

Jamaica rugby league ready for historic first home Test match

PRESS RELEASE – IMMEDIATE DISTRIBUTION

From: Jamaica Rugby League Association

Date: 25 August, 2017

JAMAICA READY FOR HISTORIC HOME TEST

Jamaica and Canada have named their squads for the second match in the 2017 Americas Championships, as they prepare to face each other in what will be the Reggae Warriors’ historic first home Test, at the Mona Bowl, University of West Indies, Kingston on Saturday (kick off 4pm).

Jamaica assistant coach Roy Calvert is hoping that the hosts, who are ranked 17th in the world, can put in a solid display against Canada – ranked four places higher – after their 48-6 defeat to USA in Florida last month in game one.

“We were very disappointed with our efforts,” Calvert acknowledged. “But we have always been competitive in our games against Canada and hopefully playing our first full international on home soil will provide us with that extra drive to ensure that we do our country proud".

Three potential debutants are named in the Jamaican squad in Steve Miller, Mathew McFarlane and Ethon Dwyer, although veteran centre Renaldo Wade will miss the game as he has not recovered from a fractured cheek bone, as will powerful winger Keta Bryan after fracturing an ankle against the USA. Aaron Jones-Bishop from UK League 1 side Doncaster is in line to play having scored a hat trick against Wales in his last outing, and the bulk of the squad come from local side Duhaney Park Red Sharks.

The visitors are mindful of the part they are playing in the sport’s history. Canada Rugby League Association president Paul O’Keefe noted: “CRLA is very proud to be playing a role in this initial Test match on Jamaican soil. Jamaica is doing great things with grassroots rugby league here and I am sure this game will assist our sport to grow even further in the region.”

Canada coach Ben Fleming, who is wary of a home backlash and that the Warriors’ match with the USA Hawks was tight up to half time, has named debutants Emil Borggren, Matt Gallagher, Jordan Henry and Ryan Murray, in a squad he is confident can win. “We’ve worked hard at standardising our provincial training programmes and I’ve really focused hard on building the right culture,” he said. “I’d like to think that it transcends into playing well on the field. The players have all brought into the new way forward so it’s looking healthy.”

Six domestic clubs are represented in the Wolverines squad, seven of them from Toronto RLC.

Sweden name squad for rugby league international

PRESS RELEASE – FOR IMMEDIATE DISTRIBUTION

SWEDES NAME SQUAD AND NEW COACH FOR HOLLAND GAME

Svenska Rugby League Förening has named their 21-man squad under new coach Sam Cammell for their international on 9 September, when they face the Netherlands for the first time, in Amsterdam.

“I’m very excited for my first game,” said Cammell. “It’s going to be a big change from playing on the field with the guys to now helping from the sidelines. I’m very impressed with the young Swedish team I am taking over and think we are in with a real chance to shake our opposition”.

Andrew Bignell, newly appointed team manager, will be taking the field alongside a record number of eight Kungsbacka Broncos in the national team. “The representatives from the Broncos are predominantly forwards boasting size and mobility which will lay a strong platform for the halves to work from,” said Bignell. “These players have performed extremely well throughout the season with some dominant displays.”

The Swedes will be without inspirational leader Joakim Svensson who is still out injured after breaking his ankle during trials with League 1 sides Toronto Wolfpack and Hunslet Hawks, but Cammell welcomes back experienced players Anthony Groth and Fabian Wikander.

“With this new era of players and staff, we are trying to build for the future by giving opportunities for new and younger players on the international scene,” said Wikander. “There is a lot of work to do domestically but we hope this can help grow the game within Sweden. We are aiming to play more sanctioned internationals in the future.”

Sweden and Denmark conclude the Nordic Cup in October which won by Norway at the weekend.

SQUADS NAMED FOR GRIFFIN CUP

Germany host Holland in Osnabrück on Saturday in the fifth, annual Griffin Cup series between the nations. The Dutch have yet to register a victory but last year were defeated only 8-6 and have benefitted from their burgeoning domestic programme in the interim.

The Nationaler Rugby League Deutschland has named a 24-man squad following the conclusion of their inaugural Steeden BundesLeague played between Ruhrpott Rhinos RLFC, Ostwestfalen, Northern Devils and Grüne Jäger.

“The Griffin Cup is an expression of the close contact between the nations,” said Bob Doughton, joint-coach of the German national team. “Our squad contains players who have only played in our domestic league and the competition for places has been strong. The fact that some of our guys have also played in Holland for Amsterdam Cobras gives the match a new twist,” he added.

Dutch head coach Kane Krlic, noted: “We are looking forward to playing Germany again, matches between us always provide an intense contest. We’re excited with the squad we’ve selected, it shows continuity from last year’s team together with the inclusion of a group of new players that have all performed outstandingly in the NRLB Championship. With seven of them under the age of 22, it’s a credit to the development of the game in the Netherlands over the last three years.”

Krilic names six debutants including, for the first time, a heritage player in Coventry Bears’ front rower James Geurtjens.

NORDIC CUP – DENMARK V NORWAY: PREVIEW

Norway visit Kalundborg, 100km west of Copenhagen on Saturday seeking a first away victory against Denmark, which would also clinch them the Nordic Cup.

The Vikingene registered an impressive 38-18 victory against Sweden in June but they have traditionally struggled against their southern neighbour. The nations have met on four previous occasions with the Danes winning three times. Norway coach Dave Hunter, who has selected his squad from nine clubs – Flekkefjord Tigers and Porsgrunn Pirates providing four each – is aware of the challenge.

“We have a huge task ahead of us playing Denmark on their home turf,” he said. “We don’t have the greatest record against them, however, we have the opportunity to take home the Nordic Cup, so the lads shouldn’t need any extra motivation.”

Ravn Arvidsønn, Leif Andreas Nilsen and former Lebanon international Gilbert Haydamous, who has been living in Norway for a decade, make their debuts, having impressed in the opening two rounds of the 2017 Norwegian championship.

Denmark coach Nigel Kitching has named 10 debutants in his squad, with 10 of his 18 drawn from the country’s most established club, Copenhagen RL. New development areas Kalundborg and Roskilde provide another six players.

Dansk Rugby League Forbund is discussing the formation of new clubs in those areas with the local municipalities. Only four players; Jesper Ika, Mark Bailey, Silas Mubanda and Eugene Hanrahan, remain from Denmark’s last full international in 2015.

DRLF president, Richard Munk Naylor, noted: “We are looking forward to the wider occasion as much as to the match itself. We are bringing rugby league to a new town, we will be handing several players their debut with nearly all of them local Danes, and it’s a chance to inject some energy and activity into the game in this region and reboot the sport in Denmark.”

Harry Jepson Trophy given exciting new format

HARRY JEPSON TROPHY GIVEN EXCITING NEW FORMAT

For the first time, this year’s Harry Jepson Trophy will be contested by four regional representative teams.

The West of England, Midlands, East, and London & South East have been undertaking selection trials as their regular season draws to a conclusion for the Trophy clashes, which are due to start at the beginning of September.

The Trophy is named in recognition of one of the sport’s greatest administrators and a passionate expansionist, who passed away a year ago.

Each region will play the other once and the top two will then contest the final at Hemel Stags on Sunday 24 September (kick off, 2pm).

“I had the privilege of participating in the Harry Jepson Trophy with Wests Warriors last year, and am very excited to be part of the brand new structure this year,” said Shun Tamura, senior manager of the London & SE side.

“I was thrilled to see not only the top clubs competing in London Premier coming forward, but a lot of Merit League players and staff putting their hand up to be a part too. We have had a healthy amount of player nominations and I am very excited to see how the squad shapes up over the next couple of weeks.

Tamura added: “The intention is to showcase how much London has to offer in terms of the calibre of rugby league played in the region and the passion our players have for the sport. This is the first time in my experience that London clubs have come together in this form and there have already been very positive conversations and discussions among the management group.”

Dave Raybould, competition manager at the Rugby Football League, noted: “There is a real appetite for regional representative rugby league in England and the 2017 Harry Jepson trophy is seen as an ideal opportunity to showcase it. Preparations have begun in earnest for what should be an exciting climax to the community season in these regions.”

NETHERLANDS RUGBY LEAGUE NAME EXPANDED BACK ROOM STAFF

The NRLB has announced an expanded back room staff for their forthcoming internationals away in Germany (26 August) and at home to Sweden, in Amsterdam (9 Sept).

Former president Timo Meinders returns in the position of national team manager, his remit being to plan the logistics of the national team and improve communications.

“I am excited to re-join the NRLB,” he said. “Over the last three years the organisation has become much more professional. The sport keeps growing in the Netherlands and I am keen to add my expertise to help to continue to develop it. My appointment will allow (head coach) Kane Krlic and the rest of the coaching staff to concentrate solely on coaching the team and not worry about anything else.”

The national team will now have three assistant coaches, joining already in-situ Joe Collins and Matt Rigby is Jason Bruygoms, the most capped Dutch player before retiring last year, he is also currently the head coach of NRLB champions Rotterdam Pitbulls.

In addition, Dutch-born Rick Aben joins as head of strength and conditioning. He is currently working in the conditioning department for leading Super League club Castleford Tigers and head conditioner for Oxford RLFC in League 1.

On the appointments, Krlic noted: “I am extremely excited to make these announcements, we believe each appointment will add something extra to the national team set up. It is another building block in our aim to improve performances each year.

“I am really excited to have Rick join us from the upper echelons of the sport, as a proud Dutchman he wants to play a role in the development of rugby league in his country. Jason’s presence on the field will be greatly missed, but with such a young squad this year he will be able to pass on a wealth of knowledge to the players.”
