CANADA RUGBY LEAGUE LINK UP WITH TOUCH RUGBY TO SPREAD THE SPORT

CRLA and Touch Canada Inc. (‘Touch Canada’) have announced their intention to enter into a formal partnership that will see a new programme established, with both organizations aiming to have rugby balls in the hands of all ages, and especially children, across Canada.

Touch Rugby is derived from league training drills and is growing across the region. The game became popular in its own right and, by the 1980’s, established as a sport under governing body, the Federation of International Touch.

Touch is now played across the world in over 50 countries and is one of the rare, thrilling sports where men and women compete on teams together and at international level.

Canada Rugby League Association president, Paul O’Keefe, said of the link up: “Touch is very similar to rugby league but taking the body contact out of the game; players need to develop all the same core skills. It is also a terrific way of keeping fit, socialising and having fun.

“I was fortunate to grow up in a rugby-dominated nation and can see what is lacking here in the development of most players in Canada. We all played backyard touch rugby before we even started school in Australia.

“In Canada a large quantity of players are not even introduced to a rugby ball until they are in secondary school which is far too late. This new partnership will provide a much-needed platform to introduce the sport to children. It is a great, new initiative and, most importantly, played in accordance with highly refined and regulated international rules.”

One of Touch Canada’s main goals is to ensure that Touch is offered and played in a consistent manner in each province or territory, leading to a team being selected for the next Touch World Cup, to be held in Malaysia in 2019.

Touch Canada president, Joyce Lim, who is actively playing the sport and most recently competed at the US Touch Nationals in 2015, commented: “We are thrilled to be entering into a formal partnership with CRLA to harness the synergies between both sports and accelerate playing opportunities for all Canadians.”

Rugby League Lionhearts prevail in Serbia

PRESS RELEASE – IMMEDIATE DISTRIBUTION
From: Serbian Rugby League Federation / Belgrade
Date: 29 June, 2016

LIONHEARTS PREVAIL IN SERBIA

A try five minutes from time by Michael Embleton saw the Yorkshire Lionhearts defeat Serbia 16-14 in a no-holds-barred battle, in heavy showers at the FK Radnički stadium in Belgrade.

“It’s a shame that we didn’t secure the win, even though we held a lead throughout the game,” said Serbian assistant coach Ljubomir Bukvić. “But new head coach Darren Higgins and rest of our staff are happy with the way we played, especially considering the rain.”

Serbia took the lead in the 17th minute courtesy of Miloš Ćalilć’s converted try and a Vojislav Dedić’s penalty.

Jack Kirmond crossed for the tourists but he could not add the conversion, nor to scores after the break for Reece Spurr and a brace for centre Embleton that countered three more penalties from Dedić.

The win saw the Lionhearts complete their tour unbeaten, having defeated a Belgrade regional side 60-12 at FK Heroj Polet stadium in Jajinci.

“Although this was a third loss to the Lionhearts in the last 10 years, each time we have shown considerable progress even though our guests return home victorious,” added Bukvić. “Nevertheless, the game and the week long training camp that came before it have been an excellent preparation for the autumn’s European World Cup qualifiers against Wales and Italy. ”

VALENCIA TO HOST WORLD CUP QUALIFIER

Following on from Monza staging a match in this autumn’s Rugby League World Cup European qualifiers, in another first for the sport, Valencia is set to host a tie, with Quatre Carreres announced as the venue for Spain’s Pool B clash with Ireland on 22 October.

The round two game could be potentially decisive for the Spanish following on from their away encounter in Moscow seven days earlier, and is the latest chapter in the young rugby league country’s unexpected march towards the finals.

“The Ireland game will not only be against our highest-level opposition in our history but it’s possibly our chance to progress through to the Antipodes next year,” said Spanish head coach Darren Fisher. “Spain is well known for the ex-pat community here and I’m sure Irish supporters will be out to enjoy the match in Valencia, it is a terrific city.

“It’s exciting to be part of the qualifying rounds, we will try not to get carried away too much in the emotion of the occasions. I will be preparing the squad for two very challenging, different styles in Russia and Ireland. The game has already attracted a lot of interest.”

Spain defeated Latvia in the European Championship C pre-qualifier, then surprised Malta and Greece to take their place in this autumn’s European qualifiers, as well as gaining promotion to European Championship B, which will resume in 2018.

Ireland face Russia at home on 29 October and will be seeking to win the group in front of their own fans.

IRL director Richard Egan said: “We are really looking forward to visiting Valencia. There is an air of uncertainty around the Spanish team as we haven’t faced them before, but we have seen their results and we know we will need to prepare for a tough encounter.”

EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP C 2016 GAME 1 – UKRAINE 46 CZECH REPUBLIC 6 – REPORT

A crowd approaching 1,500 in Rivne, a city new to rugby league, saw Ukraine dominate as they defeated the Czech Republic 46-6 in the first leg of European Championship C, in hot conditions.

Star of the show was home hero Nikolai Shalaiev, the powerful centre posting two tries in each half; the hosts profiting from a blistering start which saw them score three times in the opening 13 minutes.

UKRL president Artur Martyrosyan said. “It was fantastically organised with the club here, regional government and sponsors. This is the first in Rivne City stadium and it was terrific that their young players excelled. We are very grateful to the Czech side for the manner they played.”

Ukraine skipper Alexandr Skorbach opened the scoring and Shalaiev had the crowd on their feet with two touchdowns soon after, Skorbach missing all the conversions.

The Czech’s, who took time to acclimatise after a long journey, rallied and centre Otto Friedl capitalised on some good work inside him, Petr Sedina goaling to narrow the gap to six points. But Andriy Khrusiuk replied soon after and, on the stroke of half time, Mikhail Troiyan crossed; Andriy Shakura goaling both for a 24-6 half time lead.

There was no further score for 24 minutes of the second period as the Czech defence held firm, while they also conceded possession on four occasions when threatening the home line. Around the hour, the visitors also lost the services of Tomas Valenta and Jiri Sluka to injury and Ukraine took advantage.

Shakura scored a try to go with his five goals and young star Shalaiev went in twice more, Skorbackh, whose distribution was key in midfield, picking up Ukraine’s ninth try.

Czech Republic skipper Cedina noted: “It took us 19 hours to get here but for long stretches of a very physical game, in difficult conditions, we held them out. We made our mistakes early and that caused us to chase the game. It has been a great experience for our young guys.”

Serbia Rugby League prepare to welcome touring Lionhearts

PRESS RELEASE – IMMEDIATE DISTRIBUTION

From: Serbian Rugby League Federation / Belgrade
Date: 25 June, 2016

SERBIA PREPARE TO WELCOME LIONHEARTS

Serbia Rugby League has moved into the second phase of their preparations for this autumn’s European World Cup Qualifiers against Wales and Italy, with a week-long training camp in Belgrade for the national squad followed by an international against the touring Yorkshire Lionhearts, scheduled for Monday at FK Radnički stadium.

Last year, the North West Lionhearts made the trip winning narrowly, 22-20, in Makiš.

This time, newly appointed SRL coaching advisor Darren Higgins, who is leading the traning camp, will be keen to see the talent at his disposal.

“It’s a great pleasure that we can host the Lionhearts again,” said his assistant Ljubomir Bukvić. “They are not just our dear friends, but it is also a firm and much needed test for our side in this part of our preparations for the 2017 WC qualifiers. The boys are training hard trying to impress a new coach and not holding anything back.”

As a part of the tough schedule, the Serbia squad had a rigorous testing session at the National Sports Center, were they impressed with their fitness.

The Yorkshire Lionhearts, who have been in training since March, have brought a 21-man squad from nine clubs and will play two matches during their five day stay. Today they face the Belgrade regional team at the FK Heroj Polet stadium in Jajinci.

EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP C 2016 – UKRAINE v CZECH REPUBLIC GAME 1 – Preview

Hosts Ukraine and Czech Republic have named their squads for the opening game in European Championship C, which takes place this Saturday in the new rugby league venue of the Avangard stadium, Rivne.

Ukraine are looking for a quick return to European B and URLF president Artur Martyrosyan believes they are well placed. “This game is very important for us,” he said. “We have had a good preparation and selected the best players from the eight strongest Ukrainian teams.

“We are very much looking forward to welcoming our Czech guests to Rivne as we extend the rugby league family here.”

Czech head coach Ladislav Cintler believes his side are ready to take on a nation that sits seven places above them in the world rankings. “Our squad is a nice blend of internationally experienced players and the best youth coming through in our first division,” he commented.

“The older heads will guide us around and I am sure those coming through are ready to step up a level. I saw the Ukrainians play Russia in the World Cup qualifier and the key will be dominance in the tackle in the middle of the field, an area we did well in against Belgium last year.”

Referee is George Stilianos from Greece and the return match will be played in Havlickuv Brod on 8 October 2016.

Damien Davis, another South African who played his first-ever game of league for the Gladiators commented: “It was a lot of fun. I’m looking forward to more games.”
