BEASTWEAR PARTNER WITH MIDDLE EAST AFRICA CHAMPIONSHIP

Apparel manufacturers Beastwear has signed up to become a commercial partner of the MEA Championship, set to be held from 2-5 October at the Teslim Balogun Stadium in Lagos, Nigeria.

“Initially we were approached to design a jersey for the Nigeria Rugby League Association, but the relationship has developed to the point where we were so impressed with the management and arrangements of the tournament that we have agreed to become a partner of it,” said Beastwear’s international sales manager, Aden Nawaz. “All tournament officials and volunteers will be supplied with uniforms by us and the other competing nations – Ghana, Cameroon and Morocco – will also be wearing our designs. Replicas will be available to buy of the unique kits; it’s a proud moment for our business.”

Ade Adebisi, general manager of Nigeria Rugby League commented: “The generosity of Beastwear has been matched by the quality of the kit we have received. We can’t guarantee to win every game but we will certainly look the part. The new Nigeria shirt (pictured) must already make us one of the best-dressed teams in rugby league!”

ITALY TO HOST THE 2020 U19 EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP

Eight nations will again contest the U19s European Championship in 2020, with Italy hosting the event for the first time. North East coastal city Lignano Sabbiadoro will be the base for the biennial event which will take place from 3-13 September 2020.

Reigning champions France, who won the last tournament held in Serbia, go into it favourites along with England, who were runners-up in a tightly-fought final in 2018. The seven top ranked nations from the last tournament – also including Wales, Scotland, Serbia, Ireland and Italy – will automatically qualify for the 2020 tournament, should they wish to participate.

Ukraine, who finished in eighth position, are likely to go through qualification games, as other nations have expressed interest in being included.

“On behalf of the Federazione Italia Rugby League board, I would like to express our sincere gratitude and thanks to the RLEF for awarding the tournament to Italy,” said FIRL president Orazio D’arro. “We consider the U19s European Championship to be a vital and fundamental event and building block which contributes to the development of the sport within the region. We are genuinely honoured to be bestowed with running this competition.”

All the nations will stay at the Bella Italia Sports Village, which can hold 2,800 people across 13 hotels, and at least eight of the games will be held at the Stadio Communale G. Teghil, a complex with a 5,000 capacity stadium in Lignano.

RLEF General Manager Chris Thair noted: “FIRL put together a compelling bid as part of our tender process and will deliver a fantastic tournament. To commemorate this working relationship and help build experience within our workforce, the RLEF will – for the first time – run joint tournament directors, including FIRL’s Tiziano Franchini. Our aim is to ensure the young people involved have a great life experience regardless of results.”

LRLF APPOINT RICK STONE AS HEAD COACH

The Lebanese Rugby League Federation has named its staff for their 2019 international fixtures. Former Newcastle Knights and Huddersfield Giants boss Rick Stone has been appointed as head coach and

will be assisted by former national team players George Ndaira and Lebanon’s U20s and U18s coaches Michael Habib and Tony Sakr. Sam Ayache has been appointed as the operations manager.

“After a fantastic achievement in reaching the quarter-final the last World Cup, I am looking forward to continuing the development of the Cedars, and working with the next generation of players coming through our system,” said Stone, whose first match in charge will see old acquaintances renewed, with Lebanon scheduled to play Fiji in June.

The 52-year-old coached Fiji until 2014 and, in a further twist of fate, Stone’s last match coaching the Bati was a 40-28 victory against Lebanon. He led Fiji through the 2013 World Cup campaign, guiding them to the semi-finals.

LRLF president Assaad Feghali commented: “We had a lot of interest in the post and are really pleased to begin working with Rick and his team. Michael and Tony have been part of the LRLF for a few years now and have an excellent knowledge of the players that have progressed through our system, which will provide strong support. Rick’s experience, talent and leadership will be pivotal in directing Lebanon in this exciting new era.”

The remaining staff members appointed to support Stone are Dr Louise Shidiak (team doctor), Efrem Bunhruic (physiotherapist) Hannah Mc Grory (media manager), Mohamad Chahal (logistics) Ross Norman (kit manager).

PRESS RELEASE – FOR IMMEDIATE DISTRIBUTION

GREECE AND NORWAY NAME SQUADS FOR WORLD CUP QUALIFIER

Greece and Norway have named 20-man squads for their 2021 Rugby League World Cup qualifier, to be held at London Skolars’ New River Stadium on 18 May (kick off 1pm). The clash will be part of a double-header with Skolars’ Betfred League 1 clash with Doncaster.

The match, a first meeting between the nations and who are currently world ranked 19th and 20th , will also determine the winners of European Championship C – with the victors hosting Scotland (2-3 November 2019) and travelling to Russia (9-10 November 2019) in the final European Qualifying tournament for a World Cup place in England.

Both nations have made their final selection after warm up games, Norway playing away against an Ireland XIII and Greece holding an origin clash between Athens and the rest of the country.

Greece include a player from both of the featured League 1 sides in their line-up, Doncaster’s Stefanos Bastas and Robert Tuliatu from Skolars, with domestic champions and current league leaders Rhodes Knights supplying six players and Aris Eagles five.

Coach Jim Pizanias commented: “All the players in the squad are looking forward to the match. We know it will be tough and everyone is training really hard, appreciating that a win will take us one step closer to our dream of qualifying for the World Cup. Our squad will go into camp in Athens on May 10th , before heading to London for one of the most important games in Greek Rugby League’s history.”

Eight domestic clubs are represented in the Norwegian squad, with four players from Stavanger Storm.

“The match against Greece will be the biggest game in Norway’s short history,” said head coach Dave Hunter. “We’ve had a couple of productive camps and a tough match against the Irish. The players took a lot out of that game and know what they have to work on. Whilst we’ve done well to get this far in qualifying, we are well aware that this Greek team is going to be very hard to beat, so we’ll have to be at our absolute best. We will celebrate our national day on 17th May in London with expat Norwegians and hopefully they will get along to the game the following day to help cheer the boys on.”

Among the invited guests attending will be Norwegian Ambassador Wegger Strømmen and transport minister Jon Georg Dale.

EXCELSIOR EAGLES WIN JAMAICA RUGBY LEAGUE INTERCOLLEGIATE CHAMPIONSHIP

Excelsior Community College Eagles claimed the ninth Jamaica Rugby League Association Intercollegiate Championship, defeating Caribbean Maritime University Spartans 22-18 at the University of West Indies Mona Bowl.

Having lost their previous two Grand Finals appearances, the team from Mountain View made amends in a match that was dubbed as one of the best ever seen at this level in Jamaica.

Winning coach Roy Calvert said: “The boys really wanted this one; their preparation was geared towards improving every game. It was pleasing to see almost all the players playing their best game in the Grand Final when it mattered most, although I commend CMU for a real high quality game.”

Excelsior’s main strike threat was Akeem Murray, whose sniping runs and passes from dummy half earned him MVP honours.

CMU scored first after five minutes when powerful center Shaquiel Pollack crashed over on the left edge, Alpachini Mignott converting. EXED responded in spectacular style with 16 unanswered points as Murray, Donhue Sinclair, Towayne Dawkins and Kahil Green all posted unconverted tries by the break.

CMU came out a different team in the second half and launched a series of raids which paid dividends when Orlando Messado and Cares Stephenson powered their way over in a six minute spell, Mignott converting both to put his side 18-16 ahead with 25 minutes remaining.

Both sides had a number of chances to score, CMU’s Messado and EXED’s Joseph Berry losing the ball over the line, leaving the decider delicately poised with 10 minutes remaining, EXED scrum-half Owen Linton posting the game breaker when he crossed from close in and Green added the extras .

GC Foster College claimed third place with a close-fought 28-22 victory over the University of the West Indies Pelicans. GC Foster was led by Adrian Thomas who bagged two tries, while Joseph Starr and Shane Miller scored a brace each for UWI.

FIRST RUGBY LEAGUE PLAYED IN BELARUS

Rugby league has been played in Belarus for the first time, following a four team 9s tournament held in Rechista. The home side faced Kyiv and Rivne from the Ukraine and a side from Moscow. Tournament organisers Ilia Turik and Nikolai Zarezako were participants on a coaching course in Kyiv in January this year and, with the support of the Ukrainian Federation, returned home to start the sport culminating in this inaugural event, won by Rivne.

“It was a wonderful first occasion,” said Turik. “We tried to make it an event for those who came and for our players experiencing the sport for the first time. I want to express special thanks to Artur Martyrosian from Ukraine and Aleksandr Kolikov from Russia, without their motivation and moral support the tournament would not have taken place.”

Martyrosian noted: “We are very proud that we supported our Belarus colleagues and that we brought rugby league to this new country. We wish them every success in the development of this great sport and look forward to further meetings.”

Rugby League International Federation begins process to appoint independent directors

blobid0_1555772034518.png

The Board of the Rugby League International Federation (RLIF) has held its first meeting under the newly adopted constitution which was voted in by the members last month.

A nominations committee, led by the current Chair, Graeme Thompson, has been appointed to agree the process and start the search for three independent directors, one of which will become Chair of the organisation.

Graeme Thompson outlined his thoughts on the appointments saying;

“The RLIF is determined to introduce independent directors to complement those representing the current membership. These recruitments will be based on skills and competencies and designed to elevate the RLIF to the next level in terms of organisational performance. We expect these exciting and vitally important roles to attract high calibre applicants, with many from outside the sport.”

Members of the RLIF will also be subject to a new membership policy, on which they have all been actively consulted, and which will be implemented following the June board meeting and a second member consultation stage. It will widen the areas under consideration to cover six areas of every organisation – governance, finance, participation, technical, international and communication. From 2021 RLIF funding will be distributed according to the new policy which gives members until then to ensure that they are compliant.

The Board has also considered and approved a proposal to meet with members from the Commonwealth Games Federation in order to understand the pathway required for the sport to potentially become a medal sport at the games. A delegation, led by the chair, will meet the CGF in May.

Following the approval of the 2019 calendar, the architecture of a multi-year calendar based upon world cup cycles which will include global, continental and regional competitions plus space for bi-lateral matches has been presented to the board. This will be discussed in detail at the next meeting.

RLIF chief executive officer, Nigel Wood recognises the importance of these discussions saying;

“Around the world, fans, players, coaches all want to see a regular international competition which build upon the excitement of the domestic competitions – it unites people and provides something unique for everyone.

“We have a great programme for 2019 and we have now presented the architecture for a rolling calendar which will give everyone the certainty that they have been seeking. That now goes out for wider consultation amongst the membership and will be discussed again at our meeting in June”

Other matters discussed by the Board include a new digital strategy for the RLIF operation, branding of the organisation and an improved match sanctioning protocol.

RLIF chair, Graeme Thompson concluded by saying:

“These are really positive times for the sport internationally. The collaboration displayed by the whole membership has promoted progress in all areas. The discussions around calendar are really important and catch the eye, however the progress made on the governance of the game at all levels will be the bedrock of the sport for many years to come.”

Burundi, Lebanon, Nigeria and South Africa bid to host 2020 MEA Rugby League Championship

PRESS RELEASE – FOR IMMEDIATE DISTRIBUTION

BURUNDI, LEBANON, NIGERIA AND SOUTH AFRICA BID TO HOST 2020 MEA CHAMPIONSHIP

In the lead up to the second Middle East and Africa Championship, to be held in Nigeria for the first time from 2-5th October 2019, bids have been received to host the 2020 tournament from four nations.

They are Lebanon – who won the first MEA tournament; South Africa – who are looking to play in it for the first time; fellow potential debutants Burundi; and Nigeria once more.

Competing this year in Lagos are the hosts, Cameroon, Ghana and Morocco, whilst the 2020 Championship will see the competition revert to a regular two-year cycle.

“South Africa can be significant for rugby league internationally,” said SARL president Frans Erasmus. “We have the potential to become a major player and a lot to offer as a destination. Hosting the MEA Championship will support developing our presence on the sporting landscape here.”

Chairman of Burundi Rugby League XIII, Jean de Christ Rusiga noted: “Sport is our nation’s best ambassador and staging the 2020 MEA Championship would see all the people get behind us and the game of rugby league, we have some special things planned for our guests if we were to be selected.”

Chris Thair, RLEF general manager and responsible for the organisation of the Championship commented: “The strategic importance of the 2019 and 2020 MEA Championships is two-fold. Firstly, to establish a strong competition which is the flagship international tournament for the region and, secondly, to help move a number of the national federations from observer status to affiliate members in preparation for 2022.

“The 2022 MEA Championships will form part of the 2025 World Cup qualification process, which will only involve affiliate or full member nations. It is therefore essential that the next two years of competition go well and, most importantly, aspiring nations can progress.”

Thair added: “Having just completed the annual audits for 2018, early indications are that Ghana, Nigeria, Cameroon and Morocco are on track to achieve that before 2022, and therefore join Lebanon and South Africa. With Burundi and Congo also showing the potential to progress, then the MEA region is becoming an exciting place for rugby league.”

Karl Bistany, Lebanon Rugby League Federation international committee chairman said: “This is the way to increase our global reach and improve inclusivity within our community and key partners. Commercially, hosting the MEA Championship will provide more sponsor interest and supporters with opportunities to get further involved in the sport.”

The decision on hosting will be taken in 30 September 2019 by RLEF Board.
